I just ordered a Nokia 6220 classic unocked from ebay. This is a Symbian S60 smartphone with HSDPA high-speed data (3.5G), a 5 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens (and lens cover) and built-in GPS. Oh yeah, nice little nifty xenon flash which basically makes even the best LED flashed pictures look like no flash was used. This phone is not out in the states, and probably won't come out in the states like about half the phones nokia makes. The N82 is the only phone that even comes close to the 6220 classic for pictures, but it is very big and looks and handles like crap. Unfortunately my phone does not have wifi or an accelerometer for auto rotate, but I will probably get internet service and I don't see myself rotating the phone hardly ever except to take a picture ( and the screen rotates on its own when you open the lens cover). The nokia n95 and upcoming n96 are both great phones too, but both lack xenon flash and are actually noticaeably slower to go into picture mode and capture a picture.
So here is my take on the iphone. Can the iphone record 640x480 video at 30 frames per second? Can it do anything that is even like that at all in any way? Hmm, very hard choice here. Do I want to record standard tv resolution video with unlimited recording time (up to 8gb with the microSD card, which did come with my phone) and good quality encoding, or do I want to zoom in and out of pictures and rotate them using two fingers at once? Is there anything that any touchscreen can do that is nearly as useful or fun, or even as cool as a fully functioning video camera? I would say it's not a VERY hard choice here, people. The only reason anybody should ever even consider an iphone is if they know nothing about technology and have a hard time figuring out which button to push. My uncle is one of those types and I wholeheartedly embraced his decision to go with the Iphone 3g. I am not like that, and so here was most of my thought process when it came down to it:
"Iphone or You(tube)phone? hmmm...ding"
Anyways I should be getting my phone by next week so feel free to inquire about it. I'll do anything I can to save undeserving souls from the iphone shackles. The iphone is just presented in a totally dishonest way. Pretty much every single touchscreen phone has an accelerometer and a proximeter exactly like the iphone does, but all of a sudden people think this is a big deal and exepnsive and advanced for a cell phone. Unlike the iphone other clone phones have better cameras (LG viewty is 5mp, embarrasingly more capable) and features that are actually useful like landscape keyboarding and microSD card slots. It is fine though, because I know for certain that apple has only omitted these very basic and simple features so that in case they can't figure out enough new cool things for the iphone 4g they can fall back on adding in some "cool" features which should have been standard from the get go with the original iphone. They are totally admitting, by leaving out these extremely simple and almost free to implement things, that they might be so stupid they can't come up enough cool stuff to sell enough phones next time.
While I am at it, thanks Nokia, for being like apple for just a split second. Is there one techonolgical or maufacturing reason the N95 and n96 don't both have xenon flash, and the 6220 classic has no wifi? No, there absolutely is not. You aren't apple, but I won't pretend you never will be.
