It's a theater/automotive light. I replaced a few in my school theater before a play one time. I don't think he's being serious when he says it sucks batteries lol.

Its actually called a MOGUL screw, yeah its big. The largest metal-halide lamp comes in 1500W with upwards of 150,000 Lumen's. Its bright and hot!

I used to manage a lighting warehouse, And have collected several arc tubes from these lamps.

I want one of those IMAX projector lamps. 15kW Xenon Short Arc lamp, eight gallons per minute of water is needed for cooling, they cost $6000 each, are the equivalent brightness of the sun as viewed from Earth (So I'm told at least), and can explode with the force of a hand grenade. They weigh ten pounds each and the projectionists have to wear ballistics gear when changing them.

I have 3 minmags, 1 leatherman Monarch 500 (~100 lumens) current EDC. And 1 4sevens quark turbo (~206 Lumens) AA^2 on its way.

I am soon to add the PhlatLight PT54 red LED from the Casio A130/A140 projector to my collection, hopefully a 35W HID a little after that and I may just do an ROP to one of my mags to keep me occupied in the mean time :yh:
 
I just added an Inova X2 to the collection... this thing is built like a ROCK lol. Unfortunately, there's probably no way for me to disassemble it.
 
I've actually collected a bunch of Mercury Vapor ballasts, lights and bulbs before they became "illegal" in the US a few days ago. Bulbs can still be sold, but not fixtures or ballasts.

I have a few cases of Self Ballasting Mercury Vapors (both clear and white) - those things are cool... Really a weird technology - half incandescent, half MV.

Most probably due to inefficiency. They are phasing out the old technology, but still offer bulbs until the ballast fails and then the user needs to upgrade.
Or a part of the dark sky initiative?

I have to say I am for the ban on these lamps. I love them, but most people use them irresponsibly. Ever see a car dealership at night? Its bright! they typically point the lights parallel with the sky instead of pointing straight down. This washes out the stars and contributes heavily to light pollution. I love me some bright lights, But I love my dark night sky more.
 
But that can't be the only type of bright bulb, right? It seems to me that banning one type of bulb won't stop people from using another... And still causing air pollution.
