What lights do you have?

I have to say I am for the ban on these lamps. I love them, but most people use them irresponsibly. Ever see a car dealership at night? Its bright! they typically point the lights parallel with the sky instead of pointing straight down. This washes out the stars and contributes heavily to light pollution. I love me some bright lights, But I love my dark night sky more.

The nice thing about sodium lamps is that they can be filtered easily because they spike at a few points in the 550-650nm range IIRC.

Erns, do you have a good Q5 thrower (Tiablo, DBS, etc.)? If so, do they throw equally well or better than the X-thrower? I would think that the Q5 throws better because of the smaller emitter size, but the SST has a lot more light coming out, so I'm not sure... I have a Spear clone and basically want to know which one throws further.

The farthest thrower I had was the Tiablo A10. The A10 uses a Cree R2.

It was the farthest thrower until I got the Olight SR90 SST-90. I think the reason the Olight SR90 out throws the Tiablo A10 is because it uses a larger reflector and the SST-90 is using by 6 18650 batteries vs the 1 18650 the Tiablo A10 R2 WC uses.

Yes the A10 out throws the X-Thrower.

If the X-Thrower used a SMO reflector it would throw much more. The OP smooths out the beam gives it less throw.

The X Thrower is has more of a flood beam the A10 more of a "pin point" beam.

Why is that, are they dangerous?

They are comparatively inefficient. They top out at about 50lm/W, but strangely enough, that's what most LEDs that are designed to replace them get. The lamps last a LONG long time, but they get very dim over 30,000 hours. People don't replace them because "hey, it still turns on, so it's not burnt out" and then they have dimly lit areas.

The vast majority use metal halide lamps, not mercury vapor lamps.

It seems to me that banning one type of bulb won't stop people from using another... And still causing air pollution.

Yes, but there are lots of other spikes from the mercury. Show me a filter that can filter this:

I believe you're thinking of LOW pressure sodium lamps, which emit >90% of their light at 589nm. They're VERY rare in the US though.

Yeah, sorry, I meant LPS lamps lol. And I see them all over the place... In california, idaho, and texas (the three places I've spent lots of time).
