WAVELENGTH POLL - 473nm vs. 589nm vs. 593.5nm - VOTE NOW!

What is YOUR FAVORITE wavelength (color) in a 35mW laser?

I love the 473nm, got one on the way now from a member here, can't wait to get my first orange though, the science in every DPSS orange amazes me, what a complicated doubling process! And to pull off powers in excess on 40mW while having a 1-3% efficiency??? Amazing.

I can't vote because I haven't seen any of those colors in real life... :-/

But I am ready to get a new color (having RGV twice over). One question for the non-std owners; how many mW before you can enjoy the beam at night? No cheating, fog's not allowed ;)

p.s. Looking at Glenn's image, I'd have to say that I'm leaning towards the yellow / orange as his blue looks more like a light-blue... a color that I can't relate to so much... :-/

I thought this would good here! :)

My 40mw yellow's beam was about as visible as a 5mw green, even though the dot was alot brighter. My blue laser's beam is about as visible as a 5mw greenie too, even though the dot is generally dimmer. While it peaks about 17mw, it averages 4-5.

Thx. So I take it orange/yellow is, in the end, a much more expensive prospect... :scared:

Very much so. The 40mw yellow had a very bright dot, but the beam was relatively dim. It's a similar effect to a red, due to the Rayleigh effect.

whoa whoa whoa hold on... 40mW of 594nm ~ 5mW of 532nm? most people say the ratio is about 5mW Green to 7-8mW yellow (even better for the 589nm's)

you sure that wasn't a typo? 1:8 just doesn't seem right...

peace & thanks

the Rayleigh effect that is mentioned above contributes to beam visibility somewhat. You see shorter wavelengths scatter more. So what he was saying is the dot on the yellow laser looks brighter then the green, while the beam looks dimmer. Remember Rayleigh scattering is why the sky is blue. The blue end of the spectrum scatters more then the red end. It's not an apparent brightness ratio of 1:8 it's beam visibility, which has other factors in play :D

Yes!

The DOT on the yellow was MUCH brighter than a 5mw green, but the BEAM was about the same.

It's the same reason that a 200mw red will have a dot much brighter than a 5mw green, but the beam will be almost invisible.

Too bad the voting ended, I would have voted for 589 nm yellow.
BTW is a 40 mW yellow beam more visible than a 200 mW red one? If not, how big is the difference?

Thx everybody for the info :yh:

Speaking of yellow, how much did that 589nm 80mW CNI run you? Did you go with a GB or are you getting it directly from a retailer?

It looks great, I have to admit...

http://www.cnilaser.com/PDF/PGL-III-C-589.pdf

i'm still eagerly awaiting CNI to start making 589nm PGL-III-M sized modules in powers of over 30mW (which is their current stated max.) so I can finally attain my dream laser (CNI PGL-III-M 589nm 120mW). Of course if 120mW takes too long I can always settle for a bit less, but no less than 80mW will do :D

and so I await the day...

I don't have a 200mw red. I was just using that as a reference that everyone would understand in order to explain the beam issue.

so... what do you guys prefer as far as 593.5nm vs 589nm? Ignoring the actual laser portion of it (stability, cost, etc.) and just focusing on the color

They're both beautiful colors, but I'd probably prefer the 589mm because it's more yellow than orange.
