Very Large Capacitors

Be a bit careful doing this - shorting out caps like that can cause them to start squirting electrolyte all over the place (nasty stuff!), or perhaps even explode if the pressure release is faulty.

Its not likely to happen from one snap, but if you keep doing it over and over for a while things can get risky.

Yes, that is the reason I don't have more pictures. Only shorted each of them twice. If I ever get my hands on more of them though, I plan to defeat the pressure release, take one out into a field and abuse it (reverse polarity, over voltage, maybe pound it with some AC power or set it on fire) until it explodes as awesomely as possible.
 





Yeah, those are supercaps. Halfway between a cap and a battery. They have huge capacity for the size but they can't source much current at once. I have a 1 farad supercap that's about that size but it can only source about 20ma at full charge. Great for backup power or running a LED but not great for arc welding or turning a piece of wire into gas!
 
All caps have C , R and I ratings You need to understand what youwant and what they can do.
High V oil filled caps can kill.

What did that LCD panel show?

I don't know if you are being serious or not, but here is the information that you wanted.

The LCD showed the capacitors current Stored Voltage. The capacitor was designed to handle up to 20V and was made to work with a 1000W amp for my Subwoofers.:)

As for a size comparison this is the best that I can come up with.
It's a different brand, but I am willing to be that it is the same size as the one that I used to have. Believe it or not, but I can't seem to find the dimensions on the cap that I used to have. :(

EDIT: I FOUND THE DIMENSIONS>

Well, i have 1 farad capacitors, that i use in some electronics ..... they are usually 20 mm diameter and 15/16 mm height .

Oh, yes, forgot to say that they are 5,5 Volt :D


But i prefer my non-polarized capacitor for xenon lamp ..... 4,7 microfarad, 6350 Volt (the lamp is an industrial unit, arc is long 40 cm) :eg:

No, I was not kidding. I thought they were bigger :p, they're just flashy for car tuning.

Those particular ones are flashy for car tuning.:) They are relatively large and are definitely made to last.:) Not all 1 farad capacitors are this large. But then again, mine was made for a higher voltage.
 
I prefer my maxwell 3500V 50uf pulse cap. Over 300 joules in one rapid HV blast. Thin wires actually explode violently when you try and send too much current through them too quickly. Little strips of tinfoil or wire literally go poof and disappear in an incredibly loud blue/green blast. All that remains is a cloud of white smoke.

Also shorting it through diodes/LED's causes them to blow up like a firecracker:eg:
 
Wow 650 farads! It actually says that right on the cap so it's not just some typo.

How do you guys charge up your HV caps?
