With this new law here in Sweden you don't need to ask the police or the court to get information from the ISP's.

That's TERRIBLE, sad to hear that. Internet Freedom is getting more limited nowadays.
Move to Canada. There was a debate years ago but now its just fine as long you aint sharing.

LOL, no way, Argentina may be a poor devaluated country, but the fact that laws are not applied severely means I can pirate everything I want without anybody caring.

I got an e-mail from my service provider when I downloaded X-men Origins 3 weeks before release.. whoops. It was missing loads of special effects and textures and you could see the wires in some of the fighting scenes.. it was hilarious :D I will watch it in the cinema anyway cause it was pretty good and will be even better completed on a big screen.

Downloading is for the most part legal as just browsing the internet is technically downloading. When you talk about piracy however, such as most torrents are, it is highly illegal. There have been many fake scare campaigns and we all know the "You wouldn't steal a car.." badass voice bullshit thing which they stuffed in the beginning of all DVDs at one point.

However, in Denmark where I will soon live, they have special anti-piracy groups which have government approval to search any computer within the country. They have had huge busts where they made people pay the equivalent of $7500 per movie and $850 per song. Some of these were not even "big fish" and were just casual users. There was a 16-year old who got his parents into over $1,500,000 debt for his video collection found on his external hard drive.
I think for the most part you are safe if you only leech and do not seed, and keep away from files reported to be tracked by warner bros or similar.

I myself only download movies and music if I cannot find it anywhere else (many great Japanese and Spanish films can be hard to find) or simply to test it before I buy it. If an album has 1 good song and 12 terrible, I will decide not to pay the huge amount of money they ask for it. If an album is good, I will buy it.

The music industry is making so much money. I am fed up with millionaires who whine about "only" making $20,000,000 from their newest album because of piracy.. Come on, playing music is neither a unique nor huge talent.. they don't deserve to be that much more rich than everyone else.

When i was young.i used to tape Radio music...

So I'm asking: is downloading illegal or not?

If you reffer to the email I posted, it is the perfect example. There is no mention of downloading but rather making it availible to others.

When you upload, thats where they get you... Downloading is not the issue for organizations like the MPAA. And the only leg they have found to stand on is te uploading aspect. the problem is with torrents, you have to upload just a bit, even if you are leeching. So if you download 800mb and in the process upload 3mb, they will report the 3mb you uploaded to your ISP.

If you can completely leech, like with MIRC, you will be fine. Another trick is to change your P2P connection port, your ISP reckognizes the commonly used ports and have even been known to 'throttle' those connections.

If your going to use torrents, stick with old hard to find movies, documentaries, and tv shows. If you want the latest released screener without any risk, use MIRC and packetnews.. MIRC has tons of music, games, apps, and movies with 0% chance of any emails of warning...

I like MIRC as the download speeds are nice and fast.. Most movies come in @ 400 kb/s or quicker depending on the bot...

I used to use mIRC all the time until IRCspy wasn't available anymore, then I just started using torrents... less work. But, I may go back to IRC.

Any suggestions on mIRC search engines? Or do you just sit in the channels all patient-like and see what's advertised? ;D

I can't believe that mIRC still exists? lol

It may be old school, but im watching fast and the furious 4, and not worrying about the MPAA sending me one of their love letters through my ISP ;D

Next week is a big UFC event,  I will be getting my copy through it as well. Out of all the download options out there, I havent found a safer bet. Torrents are great for old movies that I cant find elsewhere and especially BBC documentaries, but the new stuff carries too much consequence.

There was talk in Canada that the MPAA and our gov would lower the fines to reasonable price (in their eyes) for sharing, so it would be payable by the average person. Something like 500$ per offence.. But again, only for uploading a tiny ammount of a much larger file / sharing.

If you join a group on MIRC, the download speeds are insane. A friend of mine r00tz for nsane warez, he got me in a while back just for the benefit of priority on servers.

My average download speed is 5-700kb/s and sometimes higher, with no waiting in line ;)

If you download a lot, I highly recomend it [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

NP, If you use internet explorer like I do :-[ be sure and raise you security setting to high when browsing that site. It throws pop ups at you everytime you hit search >:( Raising the security level stops it ;)
