Top five 4.9mw Multicolor Laser Fixtures??

Hey everyone, this is my first post. I'm really into lasers, I have an Band that's Dance/Club/Pop driven music and I want to buy lasers for our live show. I also work at Guitar Center and really enjoy selling lasers to people.

I know the laws and FDA variances that come with certain lasers. And my audiences and my bands safety is first when it comes to this.

But my question to you is: What, in your opinion, are some of the best multicolored laser fixtures that are legal and safe for use in USA.

I know you'll probably laugh but to my knowledge the Omnisistem RGY laser is the coolest one I know of that's 4.9mw.

I'd really like something with RGY and Blue at least. if it can do more that would be fantastic.

Any suggestions??
 





With a 4.9mw laser show you are going to need tons of fog and encourage everyone to smoke :-?

I'd look into a laser show license or whatever if you want it to actually matter.

5mW is dim lols.

I wouldn't bother with those 5mW systems, the ones I have come across are the same price as a 350 - 400mW RGY.
 
Yeah, unless your planning to project something on the wall behind you etc, those little 5mw projectors won't have much of an affect. If you have yoru heart set on lasers, then maybe it would be a good idea to look into a variance. I believe "X-Lasers" provides variance kits WITH their lasers, so you may want to take a look at those :)

What do you feel about lasers that make contact with the audience that are over 4.95mw?

I saw an amazing laser show on youtube youtube.com/watch?v=wFdmNom9xmE but the beams make full contact with everyone in the crowd. How is this safe?

Anyhow..

We'll be playing to 300-500 people mostly.

I plan on mounting at least 2 or 3 lasers above a pixel LED wall that will be behind us. (Mock-up attached).

Does anyone have any RGB laser recommendations that are $2,000 or less?

It's not safe. Crowd scanning is usually frowned upon by professionals, but there is a strong consensus of people who will say that at most lowe powers (up to a few hundred milliwatts), the risk is negligible due to the speed at which the beams are moving. The logic there is that the beam is never on one part of the retina long enough to do any damage. I avoid the audience at all times whenever I use my scanners, but in truth I've been to LOTS of shows where there was tons of crowd-scanning going on and i've never heard of any issues. Now when you're talking powers over a few hundred mW, all this goes out the window. It is possible for crowd scanning to injure the audience if the power is high enough. This recently happened at a rave outside Moscow..
 
I read about that Moscow incident.. That scares me. I would never want that to happen to anyone.

I think I want to get into so 50mw lasers if that's the case.

If I can't scan the crowd with my lasers there won't be much room for the laser to move around. Wouldn't it make the time tunnel effect impossible to achieve if you can't scan the crowd?

And doesn't crowd scanning contradict the Variance?

^The Moscow incident was a worst-case scenario. As long as you use a power level that is appropriate for the event size, you should have no problems. Don't bring your 5W green system to a house party, etc.. At all the big stadium shows where you find multi-watt systems, crowd scanning is avoided.

The Moscow incident involved weather forcing some big lasers into some smaller tents. Not a good combination. The further out in the crowd you are, the less likely you are to have retinal burns due to the laser beam's speed and divergence lowering the power density at the retina.
 
Crowd scanning CAN be done safely, but it requires hours of calculations, many rigging options etc.

Some software (eg. Pangolin) You can set "Safe zones", where it dims the laser in that specific area you set, and just runs the lasers normally in area's outside of that safe zone. It would be your best option if you required crowd scanning, but most people wouldn't care if the lasers were in there face, or just above their heads anyway.

Some people even do things like making their lasers more divergent to be safe. It reduces the super thin, air slicing laser effect, but it is still very focused and looks cool.

But I think your best and safest option would be to have it scan above their heads (Maybe about 1m above their heads, to avoid them jumping into it too, it should still have a very visible effect in dimmer lighting)

That way, you can use higher powers, but dont have to risk it hitting anyone, and still have a great effect. Just be careful of mirrors etc on the walls and roof :)

I probably should stay outta this one, but we DO audience scan at a couple of the venues we play regularly, mainly due to the layout of the space we are working with, limited ceiling height, etc...

The heads are approximately 20ft from the closest possible audience contact, and we only run our smallest (50mw) displays so the risk is greatly reduced, also we don't use any "beam" patterns there, only tunnels, skies, etc to keep the potential exposure to a minimum...

Here's a shot of the effects at that venue, this entire rack of lasers was under a grand so compared to a couple of 4.9mW from GC, well, you decide yourself ::)

The lasers are (4) SHINP SL5's, (1) SHINP DL33, and (1) SHINP DL22+, the sidelights are ADJ Rotopod 250's with gels, BTW

Crowd scanning can be done perfectly safely, but it's difficult. The show frames must be specially designed for crowd scanning, and must be very precisely calculated. If you don't know how to do it safely you simply don't do it. Leave the crowd scanning to the pros.

You could build your own 500mW RGB for about $2000 with software if you wanted. I would say this is the way to go, unless you are a complete noob when it comes to lasers. It makes it all more impressive when someone says " Where did you get that laser !?!?! " and you reply with " I built it 8-) "

I would agree with BrewCity.

About 50 mw scanning a 25' large pattern continuously.

You must, however, have an immediate shut-down if the scanning stops.

That requires continuous monitoring or an auto-shutdown.

Can you list the devices needed and the procedure for recording laser shows from any ILDA compatible system to a Pangolin system, with audio all synced up?
