What are the coolest things you have ever machined?
This just came to my mind and I was curious to know
what other types of things the machinists on this forum
like to make besides laser related things.

So if you have anything, post some pictures and explain
what it is :wave::wave:

SHOW US YOUR CREATIONS!! :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

I wish I could post some of my coolest creations but all sorts of NDA's make things somewhat sketchy so I stay better safe than sorry on work stuff.

Personal stuff is different though!

Here is my latest project, my attempt at a laser scanner. Since I won't be doing professional shows I figured I would try to DIY as much as possible. (no angry audience when stuff fails mid show!) I machined the baseplate, the diode/module mounts and pads and the flex mounts myself. I still have to machine the case out too, sometime in the next few weeks :D

I'll stop with that for now and let others share

so those mounts are made by cnc or by hand?
ive been working some magic with my mill.
i have full acres to a cnc machine shop now.
Would love to see a thread where people share there designs.

Everything I do is CNC, I have neither the patience or time to turn knobs by hand. The tricky side of those mounts is done with a 1/8" ball endmill and some tricky work holding fixtures.

This is the thread man, post up some of that magic.

i have made some weird things, even some unmentionables items.
Why did it have a hole in it. is all im going to say...
Nothing to cool yet but im trying to find some end mill bits for my mill.

Those mounts look great Pontiac!

How long does it usually take when
using the cnc? since you said it would
take much longer by hand.

Do you know how you want the case to look?

I'm thinking of making myself a silencer, but first i have to pay the $200 tax stamp before i'm legally allowed to make it :(

Well, I hope that once you are good to go, you will post some pictures of your future silencer

I use them a lot in Black Ops :D:D

You better check again the $200.00 tax stamp is to allow you to own a silencer not make one, it's $200.00 each to own one.
to make one one you have to be a federally licensed fire arms manufacture

Heh... I used to believe silencers caused guns to make a dull "pew" sound. Damn you, Hollywood

You must just like making things up. You apply for a tax stamp, that's the $200 fee. After that is approved you are allowed to make ONE silencer/suppressor. After it is made and engraved with a serial number you are not allowed to make any changes or repairs at all. If you do you need a more expensive manufacturers stamp.

No I don't just make things up, this is what I was told by a friend who happens to own a silencer.
I remember when he bought it from the manufacture and had to also buy the tax stamp to own it.

How many have you made ?

Your friend bought a silencer from a manufacturer, so that makes him an expert in the matter?

It's really quite simple, and if you did a little search you would see how wrong you and your friend are. You have to fill out ATF form 1, have the sheriff where you live sign it. Then you pay the $200 and wait for it to be approved. After that you are allowed to manufacture one and only one of whatever it is you are trying to make.

I don't need to cite my sources, and no I have not made one myself.

If done right, it doesnt make a sound at all.

A Mac10 silenced correctly only makes the sound of the action cycling, kind of sounds like a paintball gun...

Not that I would know that from personal experience machining one or anything...

160dB attenuation? That's attenuation from 10kW/m² down to less than 1pW/m². If it were a set of laser goggles, it would be OD16. I think you're dreaming, sir.
