Uhmmm, I still don't get it. At least, in Spanish and Catalan, irony has a "good intention" connotation, while "sarcasm" is like when you speak with an idiot or with someone you just don't like. I mean, "sarcasm" is like laughing at someone indirectly and irony is just trying to say something by saying another thing. Obviously, it seems that things change in English, what an irony :)
 
Wait, I made a search and check this:

'irony' is using language, an expression that has its usual meaning, in a way that means just the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
We have an expression, 'to go overboard', which means being overly enthusiastic about something, OTT (over the top) is another similar expression.
Say I go out of my way to do a really big favour for a friend, who just mutters a quick 'ta' (= a very off-hand, casual way the British have to say a quick thank you.) I might then respond:
“Don't go overboard with the gratitude.” That is, by responding as if he was being over the top with thanks for all that I had done, I am really pointing out that his appreciation was woefully lacking.

a situation can also be 'ironic'. Say a town planner has spent a year redesigning the traffic flow through a city to speed up transport in peak hours - and on the day the whole new system is be officially proclaimed, he is late because he's caught in a traffic jam.

A small town has one ambulance. A man was hit by a vehicle and needs to be rushed to hospital. The ambulance is unavailable ...because it was the ambulance that ran him down and is damaged!

i don't know why either man! but that is the trick of english. it is just the way we use it... our words don't make a lot of sense.. like bow and bow or sew and so.

but as to your very first post... you were being a smart ass by saying "First of all, pointing it at helicopters is not something ANYONE TRIES, RIGHT?" that would be sarcasm.

I don't support biglsmoker's foul language, however, Hallucynogenyc has gone off topic about English in multiple threads already and should start a new thread about it if he absolutely MUST talk about it. Forum etiquette.

Also, IR-leaking had nothing to do with getting caught by the helicopter.
 
I just ask about it when someone tells me I did a mistake. This is a friendly forum and I don't think I annoyed anyone by asking. If you don't know English, they blame you for that, if you try to learn, you get blamed for asking. C'mon, a bit of tolerance please!
 
[offtopic]English ? ..... what's "English" ? ..... oh, wait, now i recall ..... is that strange language, where you can invent a word when you don't know how to call something, and in a pair of weeks your invented word become officially part of the language ..... and that the ones that claim to have invented it, say that, with foreigners, is enough to repeat things slowly and repeatedly, for make anyone understand it, where sometimes they are speaking so strangely and tortuously that their own neighbors or familiars can't understand half of that what they say, right ?

Out from the fun zone :p and back ontopic, no IR from the lasers have nothing to do with individuation of the users from FLIR cameras ..... these cameras works with a completely different band of the infrareds (far IR heat, not near IR), so usually the beams are NOT visible from FLIR cameras, including the IR from a green module ..... there was also a video, posted some times ago, that was showing this ..... when the police heli was switching from visible to FLIR, the beam was disappearing totally, in the video .....
 
And what do you think heat is?
I used Flir handheld camers, and it´s capable to see IR or combined image of monitored place/thing. If the laser is powerfull, you will se The beam as same as the burning dot :-)
 
True, but if you know Flir cameras, you´d know, that it can see even a little percentage of any heat from the beam or exposed place. i.e 0.2 degree of celsius no problem todays or emmited IR light.
So back again - If you have an IR filter, you are not so visible till you burn something.
 
Crashpc, do you have already tried a real FLIR camera ? ..... They have a frontal Ge lens that take away almost anything under the heat band, this for grant the CCD the possibility to create an image from thermal gradients (some of the more professional ones can detect 0,5C differences :eek:) ..... with that sensitivity, any type of "standard" IR emission will blind the camera in a flash, both burning the CCD or simply saturating it, is for this reason that the normal IR are blocked form the front lens ..... then there's a DSP for create the image, that compensate the noise and irregularity of the CCD pixels sensitivity, and that give you on the screen a thermal map with colors, or a discrete b/w image, but this is a different question.

Ofcourse, i'm not speaking about normal nightvision converters and cameras, that uses near IR as illumination light, only about FLIR cameras ..... normal nightvision equipment uses light from 700 to 1100 nm (better ones in the 1100nm range), and can see easily 808 / 1064nm from a pointer, if not filtered ..... FLIR units are basically divided in 2 different "fields", the more efficent one for distance and "see-through" smoke and clouds uses from 3000 to 5500 nm, and the ones that are better for details and discrimination, but less useful for distance and "see-through" capability, uses from 7000 to 15000 nm ..... both of them filter away anything under 2000nm, so none of them can see a pointer as a lightsource (but still can see a pointer as a heat source, if it's few degrees more hot of the surrounding environment ..... by the way, this means that you have an IR filter, it take all the IR and dissipate it in heat, becoming more hot of the environment around, so you're MORE visible, in this way, cause the tip of your pointer become hot more quickly :p)

In the past, those apparates was insanely high cost, and was requiring cryogenic cooling of the CCD backplate ..... now, with peltier cells and better CCD production, the "standard and consumer" grades are no more requiring cryo cooling, and can be buyed for "relatively :p cheap" prices (still insane for an hobbyst, but you don't need to sell a lung and an eye if you need one of them for your work) ..... professional / militar grades are still insanely priced, and the more long range and efficent ones still uses cryo cooling.
 
Yes, i can silently agree -there is a difference between what camera reacts on/for, and what situation you put it in. I guess, the laser few kilometre far from camera is another story, and I´m not the one, who can qualify or judge it. My fault. I only wanted to say, that there are technologies available :-)

Just wanted to say, I rather enjoy English lesson tangents, especially when they so well explain what I know, but have difficulty expressing (the difference between sarcasm and irony,)
