LOL I got the fever a few days ago and when my wife finds out she will kill me.

I hear ya! :D I got a sled from DLs GB, an XBOX360 drive, ordered 2 sleds from psxbox and bought the drive from geeks.com today!
 
I've known people on heroin, less addicted than we are... ::)


Oh the other hand, i'm not stealing my best friend's money to buy lasers..... Yet....
 
*NEW* Not sure if this has been posted or not yet, but I just found a PHR-803T sled in a Toshiba HD-DVD player! (EDIT: NOT XBOX DRIVE)

The model is HD-A20KU
Sled information: PHR-803T, 01AB127, 1124

Player bought off of Ebay in a non-working condition, took the drive apart and the only problem was a loose heatsink.. Ah well, can't wait to get this fired up! ;D

;D I ordered three from psx-boy, and three from SenKat (just to make sure i get the correct ones). And all this while the PS3 sleds from Daedal's GB have not even arrived yet.
 
Does anyone have any idea how far these can be pushed with proper heatsinks? Is around 200mw unrealistic to expect?

I would definately say that 200mW is unrealistic. I don't think anyone has tried, but I doubt they could take that kind of abuse. I had one that had turned into an led blow at 120mA so I dont think a healthy one could go much higher. I saw in another thread that someone had pushed it to 125mA and was getting 105mW after optics. Not even the 6x builds are putting out 200mW. Not sure what the highest tested so far is, but I think it was in the neighborhood of 150mW.
 
the sled from psxboy is an xbox hd-dvd sled. as long as you get the PHR-803T sled you will have the higher powered diode. You can get it from psxboy, the drives themselves with version 000 or i have heard you can get them from certain toshiba hd-dvd drives. psxboy is probably easiest
 
Just go PSXBOY in that situation, got mine in a tiny little package, it saves you on the shipping anyway as it's so much lighter...
 
So ive destroyed 2 diodes already attempting to remove them from the PHR-803T heat sink. Thats $80 bucks down the drain. I have 3 more coming in from geeks.com, any chance you guys can help me out with this? i cracked the glass in one, and ripped out a pin on the other.... no good.
 
you have to cut away the heatsink to get the diode out. A dremel with a vise to hold the heatsink is probably best. I actually just use a small set of diagonal cutters. you have to be very careful though. I have done it a few times this way now and have down to kind of a system. Still, I think the dremel would be safest. Cut a small slit down one side being careful not to hit the diode and then use pliers to carefully peel it open.

Cutting hasn't been necessary for mine. I used the same technique as with the PS3 sleds - pressing the LD out. It's just a matter of getting the proper size and shape object to press with - it needs to be flat where it meets the LD, and small enough in diameter to drive it through. Tapping on it with a hammer is ok if done with care; squeezing in a vise is better.
 
what heatsinks were people running with the ~150mw builds? If one would use active cooling couldn't the laser be pushed alot harder?
 
I suppose pressing it out would work fine too. I am just better at cutting things. I'll have to try pressing one out next time.

Active cooling will allow the diode to be pushed harder and for longer, but there is a limit to how much power it can ultimately put out. No one that I am aware of has yet to see how high these can be driven. I have gotten up to 115mW out of one, but did not push it beyond this since my application only needs about 100mW.
