The REAL Kryton GB round #3. Taking payments now.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

OK. I've decided to add one more modification to the Kryton block. I was thinking of how we could increase thermal efficiency for the modules that will be used for labby type setups and the best thing I could think of was the addition of a fan. However with the fins being radial it kind of precludes the addition of a fan unless you mount it above the module and blow down on it. As such, I've had a brain storm to include the ability to add a fan to a labby type setup.

The modules will be larger in diameter than the original Kryton lava modules at 25mm. We'll probably increase the outside diameter to 30-35mm to add additional fin depth to accommodate the new additions. Tell me what you think
It will still have a flat base.

Anyway, with the addition of the holes THROUGH the fins, you can attach a fan to the back side of the module and have air flowing through it. The air would exit pretty much over the entire module out the fins. I can honestly think of no better setup than this as 1, it increases total surface area by a long shot, and 2 allows for air flow. Increasing the size also increases the total thermal mass. As far as I'm concerned, this is a win win scenario for those wanting to make 445nm labbies.

Interesting thermal design problem--getting a distribution of holes for heat transfer to air, while also having enough solid metal to transfer heat radially out to all of the holes. Best of luck in all this!

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

I want one of the classics really bad.
Would it speed things up if we just do a quick run on the true classic design?
Then later we all can tackle the newer designs.
maybe kenom can generate a small profit from the clasics to fund the final R&D of the beast and the pocket???

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

well primarily the problem right now is 2 fold

1. Not enough commitments on the Grooves to warrant a full run yet. I need at least a minimum of 100 barrels to make it worth the full run. I might be able to go with less, but honestly the last time I went with a run of 50, my cost went up almost 50% that worked out to over $10 per barrel increase in price.

2. I don't have the original designs. I'm having to cad them up in autocad or a compatible program so that they can be submitted to the new cnc shop.

Well I think you'll get the orders you need Ken. With the new diode out there is a huge demand for hosts like these. I don't think you'll have any problem getting 100 committed orders, especially since they've been off the market for a while.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

I think that the Beast would make for an amazing 445nm build, but I love the aesthetics of the groove more. Perhaps a new thread, with a new spreadsheet backing it would be best, since some of the entries will be outdated by now.

@Kenom: Google Documents allows you to put together a form, which automatically enters the data from users into a spreadsheet - it's quite easy to set up, and will eliminate all of the fuss, and stops people asking if they entered the data correctly or not. You create a series of questions, define what the valid inputs are, and the software does the rest for you.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

Maybe what we need to do is get a group of us who are willing to invest our funds in a 100 piece run. Keep one or two each, then have members like dave and jeff stuff them with 445nm diodes and make some of our money back.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

well I've got one person who has expressed an interest in adding funds for some additional grooves. Adding other folks who are interested in getting some for building purposes would also help.

Here is what i'm committed to at this point. I WILL have the designs done by the end of this month and WILL be submitted to either pontiacs work or another for final production. I will begin collecting funds at that point for the orders that have been placed.

My concern thus far though is I do want to see the other 3 hosts done by then as well cause production costs will be significantly decreased by doing all of them at the same time.. the machine shop won't have to go back and setup for these hosts and the cost will be cheaper than if I submit for the grooves now and in a few months the beasts, then a few months the PPR's... so one way or another we have to get all of the hosts done all at the same time... even if it's a small number of hosts vs. a larger.. Since the run is already being done, that will then just add onto a total..

Regardless of if we do add the other 3 designs to the production run, there WILL BE a run for the Kryton grooves by the end of the month.. so NOW is the time to commit.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

Put me down for a groove and a PPR. Might want a beast also but not 100% sure on that one yet.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

Kenom, quick question...

Since you do not have the old designs for the kryton grooves, Are the new ones you are making being modeled off of an actual kryton, or are you making new designs based on the original concept only? ...just wondering.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

I am making the designs off an actual Kryton. Won't be making anything new with the grooves, they are already proven.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

I've updated my order. When will you be able to confirm pricing on buffing and anodising? If it's cheap enough, is it possible for me to "upgrade" my order to include buffing and/or anodisation at that time?

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

How much would it cost to have Kryton groove painted royal purple that fades to fluorescent green with copper rings painted <1/8" wide every 1/4" along the length of the barrel? The device also needs to be able to run one of the 1W 445nm diodes from the Casio a140 projector.

Re: The REAL Kryton GB round #3

yeah the price on buffing and anodizing will remain the same. ALL BARRELS WILL BE POLISHED. I'm not going to do another run of barrels and having folks complain cause the barrels look like crap after they are anodized because they weren't polished

Wow, I won't be "painting" these. They are anodized. Doing a fade from one color to another is fairly easy to do, but if you want rings, that's just plain difficult to do with dying anodized surfaces. It can be done, but would require a lot of time. I've personally never seen a copper dye though for anodizing.

Also anyone will tell you, that these barrels are AWESOME for the 445's.
