So I felt the need to experiment with moving mirrors...
I know, I guess I shouldn't have.

It performs as crappy as it looks, no doubt.

It's a pole from an optical sled with a flat notch the size of the mirror filed into it.
Piece of mirror was glued to axle with cyanoacrylate, as was the 1/2 drinking straw to
the speaker cone. The connection between the straw and the mirror had to be
contact glue (pattex) to retain some flexibility.

And now I even have to make the other one before calling it an official and complete failure.:banghead:

Personally I love builds with just spare parts around, making your vision happen
with ingenuity!
Keep working on it, this is only the First version, not a complete failure yet.:gj:
 
That's pretty neat. You could also tape the mirror on paperclips that are affixed to the edge and to the speaker. Might have less mass than rotating the shaft.
 
It looks like the speaker is in a toilet :crackup:
try a drinking straw in place of the wooden
dowl that will reduce the weight and maby
give you better results.
 
OK I had to look up "dowel".
That IS a drinking straw, if you meant the speaker-mirror connection.
Since you guys encouraged me so nicely, I ventured on a bit:

Just playing watching/music is pretty fun as it is, but I'd like to create some lissajous.
Does anyone have an idea for a freeware that does that kind of thing?

I am playing with Audacity, but it's not very "live".
 
I must heartily agree with the win statements. Improvising and thinking of ways around problems within the means at your disposal is at the very core of development and invention. Crappy galvo indeed! Innovative thinking at it's best.

Works quite well for something that looks like a set of computer speakers that got run over by a car twice :D

Anselm, i really, REALLY love your builds! :D

They look somewhat desperate and like you grabbed whatever you had to hand (which is pretty much what you did do) but they always work great. And then, given how well they work, it conveys firstly the way that a build doesn't have to look nice to perform nicely and secondly the way that you can build something impressive out of anything you have lying around, at next to no cost.

I may have to make one of these at some point... :thinking:

I gotta say though it wasn't my idea, I have seen a picture of something
similar and decidedly better looking. I don't remember where, maybe on PL or laserfreak.net

So I nicked the idea and just did a remake.

The speakers were pulled from a recycling bin, so 0$.:D:evil:
And they are great because they have a build in amplifier and thus simply plug into a headphone port and straight into the wall socket.

I'm doing A-levels (the British last year of school) and there's lots of work so it's hard to find time to undergo big projects. That said, i need to order just a few more parts and my spirograph will be done, but that was for school so i had an excuse to be focussing on it as a priority :evil:.
