SSY 1's Recently?

Jeffrey -- 275 Joules ???? Really?
And the flash tube took that ??
That's a lot of Jewels!!!
HMike

Now I'm not so sure I got air breakdown at 15 J....
My old photo flash caps may be really OLD!!!!

No idea Mike. 275J is an extreme amount of energy! These are just results that others have posted on the FAQ. 275J seems REALLY high.

Mike what kind of lens are you using?

I'm using a 6" FL glass something lens !!! Long ago, I burned through
foil and ionized air with a 5" FL lens but I chipped the glass on both sides.
I think I have too much ESR and not pumping the cavity properly.

Do you know when you will receive your YAG head? MI wants $195 for just the head, no circuitry included O.o

This new head is to arrive around 12/18.
My problems with my old SSY-1 appear to be
related to the old flash capacitors. I emailed
Dr SAM and he agrees. I ordered new caps today.
As for "circuitry", a camera flash has a trigger
circuit...
HMike

The price just went up $10 :-(

Perhaps I'll just kindly ask you for a DIY guide once you have everything figured out since I'm not an electronics guy :p I don't want 700V up my arms and across my chest

EDIT: or perhaps you'd be interested in selling one later on?

I've done it before, it's not too bad. Surprises the hell out of you
There are some strobe schematics on my site if you know how to read them.

How well does a 3kV trigger work on these tubes? The spec sheet recommends 10kV.

I usually run ~600 V with ~ 15 to 20 J.
Ej=CxV*2/2 Do the math.
I use whatever camera trigger coil
I have -- never fails.
HMike

I'm currently testing with an old cheap
camera flash board. Powered to 4.2 volts
(LiIon!) I can get near 600VDC on my cap
bank. The trigger coil will light it up.
A cheap charger takes a while to put the
"jewels" into the bank

NOW - I need to find good glass lenses. I damaged
another lens with my old SSY-1. 15 Jewels doesn't seem
like much --- but it is ----
HMike

Should BK-7 take the power?

LS --- OK, off to Edmonds I go ---

These little bastards with a Q cell
can hit reportedly near 1 MW !!!

12/11/2013: My first SSY (copy?) from Isreal
is in the USA and in the good.... hands of USPS.
I will post photos when it arrives. I expect it to
be quite similar to the SSY-1 but with an attached
trigger coil.

:wtf: Holy smokes thats a lot of energy!! Wow... with caps that big I would have
all the wires checked and caps inspected before even thinking about charging them up.
Treat these caps like you would a live grenade. :bow down:

Using Aerovox caps from a defibrillator are you?

I don't think I would ever try to push 275J into one of these. Im just not sure it would survive. I just use a couple of flash capacitors charged in paralell and dischsrged in series. I think it equated to about 7 joules of input but Id have to go dig the caps out to verify.

By the way, be careful with your caps. I had a close call with mine and ended up making a VERY deay cconnection across my heart with photo flash caps. (I don't even know how it happened). It ended up making me take about three steps back, I turned around and yelled "WOW". I wasn't sure if I was still alive for about 3 seconds. Was scary.

What happened was my piezo igniter wasn't grounded properly and I needed to discharge the capacitors. So when I was trying to get the igniter out (hot glued in), thats when I got zapped. I was being very very cautious and didnt even feel my other hand touch the other side of the bank!

That happened to me once. I built the "High Energy Pulser" kit from Information Unlimited and had been
"playing" with it for years. I got a little too comfortable with it and was poking around making some
adjustments. I don't remember the exact figure, but I think it was around 200J that went straight
through my chest. The caps had discharged completely! It was a very strange sensation. There was
no pain, but my arms jumped and my hand got cut on the case. I remember gasping deeply. My heart
probably stopped beating for a second.

My advise to anyone reading out there would be to keep a defibrillator in the house. Otherwise have
someone to shock you a couple more times until the heart starts behaving again.
