Sony 20x burners $24 at Newegg

Ok, this is my open can...

It looks bad around the edges in this picture, but it's not really that horrible.. Unfortunatelly, there is some solder residue on it, since it was soldered in, but the vice method of pushing it into the AixiZ module always takes care of that no problem...

I also noticed, that one of the edges of the pedestal is bent.. You can see that on the left in this pic.. I don't know if it happened while they mounted it or while i was extracting it.. I never went that deep with the screwdriver, so i kinda doubt it was me.. But i don't think that should matter, as long as the middle is ok.

I don't think i would recommend this particular model to anyone, who isn't very patient and carefull at extracting.. Didn't know there would be such a difference between almost the same model (7191 as opposed to 7190). Who knows what the 7200 contains..

So is this a short one or a long one? Besides, what is the difference anyway? Is the long one really more powerfull, or is that just a guess?

EDIT: After looking at it through a magnifying glass, i saw, that the chip starts at the base end ends almost at the top, like in the long chip picture... Is this what it's about? Does the short chip start higher?

EDIT EDIT: I replaced the pic with a better one.

Igort as Phenol said it is the long one, also I think they come bent. I pull out two and it was the same and if you look at chido picture it is bent also.

Thanks!

Good to know i didn't hurt it.. And good, that it's a long one.. If it matters at all of course..

So i guess, even tho it was hard to get out, it was worth it.. Good..

BTW: Are these connected the same as the 16x DVD LDs?

  GND

Is this correct?

I can't help, but wonder, what this would look like, powered outside of the AixiZ module... I've only seen closed cans so far, and you can't see the insides when powered..

case is cathode. you can actually see which terminal the bonding wires go to.

Yeah, i did look at it through the magnifying glass in the meanwhile, and noticed it.. It's even visible in the above picture, so the connections are the same... It's amazing, how thin those gold wires are.. The fact, that the can is open actually scares me a bit..

I'm gonna mount it now and test it. The sooner it's in the module, the better.

BTW: Is the pedestal also made of gold?

i think it is just gold-plated iron. the only solid gold thing is the bonding wire. pure gold is waay too soft to provide mechanical rigidity

Glad to hear you got it harvested succesfully. You're going to have a great time with "the monster" [smiley=evil.gif]
One thing, be careful when placing the spring in the aixiz module after the diode is pressed in, I don't remember who, but there was some guy who snapped the wires in the diode with the spring, and thus killed it. [smiley=undecided.gif] I don't think you'll have any problems once the spring is in place, but when you put it in, be careful.

Yes, i was thinking about that, since they are exposed.. I'll be very carefull.

It works, but at 410mA i didn't notice any visual difference between the open can and the 16x at 280mA.

Maybe it's because it took me quite long, till i set both up and aligned the beams, and the open can got too hot in the meanwhile and dropped in output, i don't know.. On the other hand my 16x LDs are all pretty amazing. I got very lucky with them.

I wish i had a laser power meter....

Price dropped $1... now $22.99 with free shipping!

Lol...really got to watch this deal...they seem to change the price every other day or so. Anyway, thanks for the heads up...I ordered a couple more. ;)

It possibly dropped in output...they do generate quite a bit of heat. But I am glad you got it working.

Me too.. But ever since i'm only using battery power, all my LDs survive.. I wish i knew about the dangers of PSUs before..
I've build three lasers since then and they all live and work great (two 16x red and the open can)..

On the other hand, i really expected a visible difference in the beam.. I mean, my 16x are crazy, they can all take 330mA without a problem, but i drive them at 270-280mA, since i don't want them to die to soon and there is not much difference visually from 250mA up.. And they don't even get hot at this current. Only warm...

The open can got so hot, while i was aligning the beams, that it was hard to hold it when i powered it off.. Later i tried again, for a very short time at 380mA and i think there was a slight visual difference..

I'll have to finish my peltier cooling system before pushing it to 420mA again. It really gets hot.. I hope, then it'll have a brighter beam... If not, i still have four very good red lasers...
