Sony 20x burners $24 at Newegg






Well I ordered one on Monday morning and it was at my house tuesday mornig, less than 24 hours. One of the benefits of living 2 hours from Los Angeles!

BUT, I finally hooked it up last night, had DDL circuit set at 236 mA. In the same exact setup as the DDL MXDL build. It was lasing fine, and as I was focusing the beam it got really dim. It's now an LED. Only lasted about 30 seconds at 236 mA. Hmmmmm....

That's weird... Mine took 430mA without any special cooling, except for being held in a vice.

236mA shouldn't require any cooling whatsoever..


Can you tell me how you are powering your LM317 driver? PSU or batteries? Which ones?

Also, did you have a capacitor on the LD? Was the circuit perhaps powered on and off, before you soldered the LD to it? Was it perhaps momentarily disconnected and reconnected to the circuit?

you most likely damaged the LD from focusing, and the spring in the module caused damage. If you don't take care while inserting the spring, or if you start focusing the thing without care, there is a chance you will screw over the sensitive parts in the LD. when you said it got damaged while focusing, that was my first guess.

although, its too early to jump to conclusions, what batteries were you using, how charged were they, and pics of the driver, and the dot focused to the best of your ability on a wall 5-10 feet away.

This was the standard DDL MXDL build per the sticky, followed exactly, with 2x E2 CR123 batteries. Cap was shorted, then soldered directly to the LD using radio shack heatsink pliers on the LD side. Like I said, it worked fine for about 30 seconds or so.
 
Did you check the diode to see if one of the gold wires was damaged. Maybe you ruined it while focusing it like Amk said.

I can barely see those things with the magnifying glass I have, I'm getting too old to see that little stuff. The wire is there, but I can't confirm or deny that it's intact.
 
Well, I just took a good look at my aixiz module. And it looks almost impossible to damage the diode once the spring is in place as there is very little space in there for the spring to twist or simply move and touch the diode. I think you might have touched one of the gold wires with the spring when you inserted it, and thus weakening it. Then it snapped while it was in use.
Do you have more magnifying glasses? Come on man, look harder, imagine that you're in YOUR 20s and your vision might get better. LOL ;D ;D ;D

Now I can't seem to get them out of their heatsinks. I am using plural words because I also don't know which one is the actual red one. I have one disconnected from the sled, but it is fully encased i a heatsink, and is not coming out anytime soon. The other one either doesn't even have a heatsink or it is pretty small and is very stubborn about coming out of the sled. I'll try to find some more info in this thread, but can anybody offer any help?

Go back and read through the thread. The one you removed I believe is the infrared one. The other one comes out easily by removing the glue and prying up (very carefully) on the base of the diode. There is no need to remove the heatsink to get it out.

Hi chido,
If the gold wire was damaged there would not be any light at all coming from the laser. I don't know what happened here, but I sent one to a friend and his only lasted for 30 seconds...lol. His has the meredith module with Jay's heatsink. It is on the way back to me for repair and I hope I can find the cause of it turning into a beautiful led.. ;D
 
Gazoo, I went back and looked at the first page again, and I did find the part that explained the extraction process. It turns out that when I gave up on the completely closed one (now known to be IR), I had started on the correct one, in the CORRECT way!! With that knowledge, I have completely and (as far as I know) safely gotten it out!!!

and GEEZ this diode is tiny! I guess I always knew they were small, like 5 mm, but I guess I never actually realized how small it would be. If that makes any sense lol. This is the first diode I have ever harvested, and I'm extremely happy it was a success!!!
 
Good to hear you got it out, and I know what you mean by tiny. When I first saw a diode, I was like WTF this little a$$ thing is supposed to burn things? lol ;D
 
i just got my sony drive today and did my first extract, too. i used a 20x lupe to see if the little wires were still attached and sure enough they are still there. hopefully nothing happened to it during the harvest process but i guess that will be a wait and see game till i get my mxdl from DX.
 
does anybody know the pinout of these diodes, or are they the same as Senkat's cause I can just find that by myself...

Yes, the open can diodes are the same connection as the Sony/Senkat reds. Now, if you ever harvest a blu-ray writer, it may be a different connection. For sure on two drives, it is a different connection on the blu-rays...
