SOMEONE please help me decide

Well I have the choice, I can either continue saving and get a Lexel 88 argon laser that's doing around 1.9W at 20-25A tube current ( water cooled ) , or I can not bother getting that and instead spend the money on starting an RGB laser ? What do YOU think I should do ? ::)

So thats like what >70A of current and 3 gallons of water per minute, plus more money and power for a PCAOM ? ::)

Edit: Taking into consideration that you already have a multi-line argon, I'd spend the money towards an RGB.

Sarcasm doesn't work well on the net unless you use [sarcasm][/sarcasm] :(
 
Argon. You can always buy a pcaom and add a red laser to it later. Then you'll have a multiwatt RGB which is way more than you'll be able to get if you buy all solid state lasers. Even a 1W RGB will be super expensive.

But , I don't have access to huge amounts of power or water  :( I would love to go for the argon but I dunno if I can afford to run it .


EDIT: well I do have access to them both, with a few modifications to the shower power involving a junction box being installed.

I'd say go for an RGB laser, but maybe I'm biased since that's what I want to make. It would definitely involve a somewhat longish build time, since collimating and combining the three beams will be a difficult and very careful task. Also, you'll probably get to machine your own parts. :)

RGV isn't great for beam shows the violet is too dim, and it isn't great for mixing either. Even though it's cheaper than 473. the beam from a 405nm laser is also fatter than a 473nm, so mixing and getting it on the galvo mirrors won't be as good ( more power loss ) plus dichros for 405 mixing are not so easy to come by .

I agree - I've built (well, actually refitted) a couple of GVB's, and while they add an interesting effect to our smaller shows, the violet and turquoise colors are fairly "sublime", I would also expect that to be the case in an RGV setup...

Just my two pennies 8-)

I would consider adding 405 in with the 473 at a later date, just for a bit more depth ( Especially when 8X diodes are readily available ! )

think of it this way...

SOLID STATE WILL ALWAYS BE AROUND

Big gas lasers are a dying breed. Get one while you can.

ALSO... they aren't that expensive to run.

One kilowatt hour where I live is about 8 cents. That means I can run a small 120V argon at 10A for an entire hour and it costs $0.08

So, lets say a lexel 88 is 5 Kilowatts, but on house power it will probably be less. You can run it for an hour and it will cost a whole $0.40. Ten hours for less than 5 bucks...

Yeah they take a lot of power to run, but people dont realize it's not high power items that kill your bill, its all the lower power stuff that runs constantly 24/7
