What beam? It's like trying to collimate a Magenta laser, which consists if two wavelengths.
Yep. This diode pretty much sucks.

ok how about one of those lenses from optotronics, the one with the 4m focal length, so it would almost be collimated?
 
I dont think $500 is a bad price. YOU'RE GETTING A LASER THAT DOES HALF A WATT OF VISIBLE LIGHT FOR $500. Not bad at all. Not to mention, this diode is DESIGNED for 500mW. It's not a DVD diode designed to do 150 that we're pushing to 300. This diode will last for the recommended lifetime at 500mW. probably like 10k hours. Not bad if you ask me.

Yes, you are right... The only things is that isn't good if the diode fry, $500 is a big amount of money, and sometimes, in all test on the diode, it will can be died.
But you have reason, 500 mw for continous use... Is a very good power of visible light.

Well, I can offer 500mW red lasers like the Orion 200mW at laserglow for just $550 - VERY limited time offer so get in touch soon  ;). Its the whole, turnkey, US-legal laser for the price though! If you're planning on getting a 500mW diode, I sure hope you're not planning on sticking it in an AixiZ module! You'd need to make/buy your own housing with adequate heatsinking.

Yeah same with that 500mW 445nM laser diode that costs (I think it is) <$2000. Now compare that to WL's Sypder 2 BX that puts out 20mW of TEM03 473nM for about the same price.

pseudonomen137: That is allot better deal than getting this diode. But I don't have $550 :'( post some pictures! ;D

A 200mW Orion that outputs 500mW? *smirk*
By the way, it is a 9mm diode, so you could pit it in a meredith module. It is multimode, so it has horrible beam specs. Then for heatsinking, use a big block of aluminum.

Notice he said "LIKE" the Orion 200. Not "IS" the Orion 200.

I've been playing around with the pump diode of my X105 (now G105 ;D) and with the right lens, the beam isn't that bad. Yeah, it's pretty bad if you want nearly zero divergence and a round gaussian beam, but the point of a 500mW laser (at least in the hobbyist community) is to burn. If someone wanted a red laser for pointing they'd build a 20X DVD burner laser or go to office depot. So I really don't think multimode diodes have horrible specs, it all depends on the use for the laser and what one would classify as "horrible." Personally, now that I've played with a few hundred mW of multimode IR, I think the square beam is fun ;D.

Well, i guess your right. The Orion has only one model. I checked just now, and it is not 500mW, but it is 200mW.

Well, i guess your right. The Orion has only one model. I checked just now, and it is not 500mW, but it is 200mW.[/quote]

Maybe he means that it just looks like the Orion 200 but is 500mW. But what diode does it use?
 
Haha, sorry guys. Its just like how you can get a Nova X Series 20mW or you can get a 150mW. You can get an Orion 200mW, or you can get the same model but in 500mW (through me of course  ;)).

It utilizes a multi-mode c mount 660nm diode and is rated for 500mW CW operation (no overdriving). Just $550 for a brand new one w/ power cert if anyone is interested, but you only have a few days to get in on this! Just letting y'all know


PS: For clarification it'll look and function just like the laserglow Orion except without the writing on the case of the Orion. Output is 500mW from the OEM - not overdriven, actualy output may be >500mW.

Show some beam pictures and dot pictures! I thought multimode diodes can't be collimated very well...
 
he obviously doesn't have it yet.. he is going to order it(atleast from what i can tell) when you order it from him
