I've been playing around with the pump diode of my X105 (now G105  ;D) and with the right lens, the beam isn't that bad. Yeah, it's pretty bad if you want nearly zero divergence and a round gaussian beam, but the point of a 500mW laser (at least in the hobbyist community) is to burn. If someone wanted a red laser for pointing they'd build a 20X DVD burner laser or go to office depot. So I really don't think multimode diodes have horrible specs, it all depends on the use for the laser and what one would classify as "horrible." Personally, now that I've played with a few hundred mW of multimode IR, I think the square beam is fun ;D.[/quote]

There is no such thing as an Orion 200. It is just an Orion from the Orion series. One is a 200mW Orion, and one is a 500mW Orion. Do you see Orion 200 in the title? no.

DAMMIT! Turns out I was sent the wrong pricelist (wrong currency). Revised price is $650. Sorry if it seems I was trying to bait you guys or anything - this was an error beyond my control.

As for pics, all I have on hand is a 290mW unit. Honestly, if you saw a beam though it'd just look like any other ordinary red laser beam - not really any difference you'll see. What you'll notice though is that a multimode diode like this will give you specs closer to 3-5mm and 3-5mRads unlike what we're typically used to, and the beam profile will be square. I took a beam pic of a red multimode 875mW module and a pic of a 1mW keychain in fog. Other than brightness, there ain't any difference you'd discern from the pic.

Sorry but these are manufactured by CNI and I don't know the details on the diode. I have seen 635nm and 660nm c mounts before, but I've forgotten where. What you'll find is that when you get into higher powers, most of the diodes will be c mounts if not heftier packages. Cans are only used for low power diodes ;)

What about the TO-3? It has a can... Are there any TO-3 red diodes?
 
Heh, well when I said cans I meant 5.6mm and 9mm cans - the 5.6mm particularly since that's what we're all used to using in AixiZ modules. TO3 are a whole different package altogether - quite large, heavy heatsink. I'm sure there are TO3 reds, afterall its just mounting the chip in a diff package, not like engineering a whole new diode. Again though, I can't remember good sources to get the off the top of my head, and even then you usually need to purchase in a min quantity of 10.

What is the most common wavelength of those red diodes in the TO-3 package?

The SLD1332V 500mW diode is in a 9mm TO3 package, and i have seen 1W IR diodes in TO3 packages.

Well originally, I got a pulsar and at first I thought it was the best burner ever! Then I realized that 100mW was weak, so I needed more power, and built a 200mW laser. Now I feel the need for even more power and red is my favourite colour so, I want to find a high powered laser diode in a stronger package like the TO-3.

Is a 655nm red lab style (diode) laser from Dragon Lasers with power > 500 mW.
It cost $350, better than $500, and it isn't multimode diode.
Other things: with this waveleight the beam is too much visible than 670 nm, right?
We can use this diode to made a high powered handheld laser... :)

No question about it being multimode... 5x8mm beam, 3mRad, etc. Not worth the $350... not even close
 
Sony would be a good bet..probably cost you a bit. Also, those (and ALL 500mW+ red diodes) are multimode diodes so the divergence will be large, and the beam profile will be lousy.
