Let me know if you can't edit the poll, I can edit it for you if needed.

Cheers,

Why not just add it to the "Drivers, Test-load, Power Supply, & Batteries"??

You are still missing Spectrometers.... Divergence measurement...
MPE measurement... etc...

In a Laser Measurement section all those missing devices would
be included and in one easy to find location...;)

If I want to know about batteries I know which sections to
visit without having to wade through the entire Forum Posts.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear before.... If someone would be
looking for a device (LPM for instance) I personally would send
the Member to the B/S/T or Pro Shop sections to make their
choice there.

Yep, I agree with the no LPM in the title, as for the advertising, the reason I added that was because it was aparrAntly an issue in past threads. I think most of us agree with rhd now.

I voted yes. Hopefully someone can come up with a cheap variation of a spectrometer (something a bit more high tech then the current diffraction grating method).

Bob... you are aware that High Tech equates to more $$$...

I believe the last time this was brought up, the main reason it was shot down is that it would end up being a pile of advertising for lpm manufacturers and a potential source of drama.

This is a better idea, can cover lots more than just specific LPMs, IMO

I dont see a problem with this type of heading. I know when spectrometers were brought up last time lots of people chimed in on places to get one and what works and doesn't, no different IMO than the Gas Threads which posted about the Meredith HeNe at a good price, or the thread on the 473 DPSS that was sold on ebay. But this section can cover lots of other ground also!

Voted yes, It is very needed, if flashlights has a forum by itself I think Lpm,Spectrometers,etc... should have there own thread to.

It would be nice if the Members that voted against this
new Laser Measurement section (other than RHD) would
at least weigh in and explain why the are against this
proposal for a new Laser Measurement section on
the Forum...

We've tried to chip away at this idea, and have failed, but I'm quite optimistic.

Even the science surplus spectrometers that cost $500 calibrated, are using a diffraction grating principal. Having now really played around with my spectrometer, I really don't think it is that fundamentally difficult to design, even from scratch.

And at $500.00 calibrated that is a bargain at today's
prices for a brand new one...

For sure - and mine has been worth every penny I paid for it.

But I know that, you for example, could make one of these.

The principal is very very simple. First of all, ignore the fact that it's got a "fiber input". In reality, there's nothing to that other than a hole drilled in the optical bench with the fiber connector epoxied on. On the inside, that just shines at a mirror.

You basically have two mirrors and a diffraction grating inside. These things can all be purchased. You have some adjustment mechanisms that are no more complex than what the guys on PL use in their projectors (less so), and then you have a linear CCD. That's the only complicated part of the whole setup - the CCD. The software does nothing but read and interpret the intensity of light hitting various portions of the CCD, and scale values based on a polynomial equation.

I don't think we could necessarily beat the $200 uncalibrated pricing, especially not initially, but I also don't think we'd be that far off. Long story short, I don't think it's a "getting them cheaper" argument with spectrometers. But rather, I think it's more of a "we can make these things in the hobby community one". I'm sure some enterprising young members will tackle it soon enough.

Thanks c0ld....

@ RHD....

I know how those Spectrometers function... we have the same one that
you have.. We just haven't found the time to calibrate it.
Too much on our plate at this time...
