Should I become a veteran?

"Why won't those stupid idiots let me into their crappy club for jerks?"

Hey bobhaha....

you can now....

LMAO  Thanks....

Congratz man
You are not fully veteran yet though.. Dave will fill you in on some tests you have to go through first, but don't worry, only a few people die doing them every year

Seb

I'm ready to take on the challenge! I heard this year you must run through a beam of 700W green laser... if you make it out alive you will become a veteran.. I'm so scared

:lasergun:

I'd do that even if they didn't make me a veteran. I want to see 700mW of green :)

OMG!!! I just realised I forgot about Kendall!!! sorry man! with out you I wouldn't of got my 6x working!! thanks again.. adding you to OP.. sorry!! :banghead:

I wonder if I could get a read-only override? I can't stand having to sift through so many posts just to find interesting information. It's like:

"Company A rocks"
"no, Company A lies, Company B and its female head rock"
"Nuh-uh, Company A's female head is hotter and probably has an accent"
"Company C is the best, hands down!"
"Who are you, gtfo you stupid n00b, stop asking questions and search"
"stop posting relevant information to old threads!"
"Yes, but the polarization angle of the KTP must be precisely 47* off axis from the YAG lasing polarization while still keeping parallel and on axis with the cut plane. This is caused by the quantum effect of ...."
"I thot green is red and blue mixed togethr?"
"How much mA will burn my friends finger off?"
"Just kidding, Company A is ok. My laser dint melt thru metal so I thot it wasn't the advertised 50mW"

Sorry, I had too much fun with the examples, but you get my drift.

Anybody have any hints or clues as to where all the more advanced conversations go on? I really hate asking this, because I love browsing these forums. I just NEED something different. My mind wants more information than what modules fit what hosts. I want to know the Hows and Whys of laser diodes and solid state lasers.

What you want is in the normal forums. There's not much in the vet's section.

The only thing interesting in the vet section is the odd conversation about the latest drama and the junk box, which is a box guys send around as a kind of gift/junk box :)

It's not that active in there either, as Potatorage said, all the info you need is in the normal forum so stop wandering about what's in the vet section and do some reading and research.

What modules fit in what hosts? Well considering 90% of modules at made to a standard 12mm diameter, all modules fit all hosts... With a few modification for battery sizes or green modules etc.

Look up jayrob and that's about as many flashlight/laser host combination's you'll find, Ehgemus also does really call custom lathe machined hosts.

Ah, ok. Well, thanks for putting my mind at rest. Finally, I can stop spamming the forums with my asinine questions

As far as all the talk about which lasers fit which hosts, I understand that many modules are standardized, hence my curiosity as to why there are so many questions about it. You can get anything to fit anything with a little ingenuity and elbow grease. I will say, though, that the members' kits that are advertised and available through the forums are a great way to end up with something that has great build quality and that you can say you made yourself! Not to mention the members who offer their services for a great price! Not very many places can you get a heatsink, custom milled to your specifications, using solid copper, and not even $50! I love the enthusiasm here, I just wish it were easier to find answers to my questions w/o having to actually post all my questions. I don't even know what to search for.

For example, Green DPSS.
My initial understanding was that it's a near-IR 808 laser. It shines through a crystal that turns the beam into 1064nm, then it shines through another crystal to turn it green, and it exits through a lens to collimate it into a beam.

I now understand (Thanks, LPF!) that the 808 diode pumps the Nd doped Yttrium garnett crystal (gain medium), causing it to lase at various bands, primarily the 1064nm. From there, the 1064's frequency is doubled with another non-linear crystal, normally KTP. Since wavelength and frequency are inversely related, when the frequency doubles, the wavelength halves and the light exits the KTP as 532nm green. It then passes through collimation lens and maybe filters before exiting the aperature. This is all assuming coatings for the cavity mirrors.

So what affects spot size? Is it how focused the 808 is on the ND:YAG? or does the ND:YAG lase with the same spot size, changing modes as alignment or heat becomes too much?
Does KTP double all 1064nm light, or just coherent light?
And what's all this about multimode diodes? is it like one lasing cavity with multimodal output, or is it because they design the diodes with multiple cavities?
And how the heck to diode lasers lase anyways?

Don't answer these here (if you know the answers, though, feel free to PM me ;-) ) but these are just examples of questions that come up whenever I learn something new.

BTW, I'm betting the next thing to catch on around here would be custom lathed and milled hosts. I'm not interested in paying the premiums, I'm just saying that's my prediction.

We already have custom lathed hosts. If you dont know that, then you need to read a lot more, and forget about being a vet. This is why you need 1000 posts to get in. Why should you jump the gun, when everyone else has to wait? Because you want too? Sorry but that's a poor reason, no matter how smart you are. Spend the time we all did, then you can have the keys to the club house. If you dont want to wait then there are other forums out there. Either way you'll still be a n00b because you will be just as far behind.

Thanks for the laugh. :crackup::crackup::crackup::beer:

Dr Lava has less than 1000 posts yet hes allowed in.

You are on Laserpointerforums. You know, mainly focused on building hand held lasers.

Some people are an exception to the rule. Lava has done massive amounts of work to further the laser hobby.

I dont about you, but till now I never even heard of BShanahan14rulz. He has 2 threads asking n00b questions, and knows next to nothing about most things here, yet he wants to get into intellectual conversations in the vets section?

Sorry.....

It seems to me that most people here are not interested in building lasers. Most seem to be appliance opperators interested in buying lasers and making redundant semi-reviews.
I miss a lot of good stuff here because I don't have time to sift through all the "Null" postings made by post builders.
