That is pretty much all it is... Set it to the correct range and correct type of current (DC Volts vs AC Volts). Red wire to positive, black wire to negative. Read the display, viola! Hell - you can even reverse the polarity so that red is on negative and black is on positive. It'll just read out a negative voltage instead of a positive voltage.
Difference being you need to know what voltage your battery is supposed to be - rather than the device figuring out if it's correct for you. Some battery testers I believe will do more in depth testing than just voltage too.

Oy! I was hoping it would be more like my current battery tester. Set it to the correct battery type, and then touch the red wire to positive, the black wire to negative, and check the reading.
