Sad world we live in

That's actually pretty interesting.

Some states are actually a suprise to me. Texas in particular suprised me on that map.

I won't try to change anyone's opinion on gun laws, at least not in this thread. My only comment is that guns are not the problem, at least not all of it. Take away the guns, stabbing rates will go up, take away the knives, and death by Louisville slugger will go up.

Violence is a part of our culture. Even from the very early days when we were fighting the British for our independence and warring with the native Americans for their land.

I know this seems nuts to anyone looking in for the outside. Just as nuts as most countries lack of guns, fireworks, porn, and lasers seem to us. ;)

(ok that was actually a couple of comments...)

Fun(?) fact:
After the Aurora massicre, gun sales actually exploded, and applications for permits rose 43% compared to last week....

Anyone guess why?

Cheers!

I too agree with the opinion that Guns are not the problem. Society is the problem. People are the problem. Canada, Switzerland and Finland have statistically more firearms per household than the US yet we have a fraction of the violent crimes committed with them.
Hmm... what happened?

most the people with guns here are the thugs and the crazies....we need more good people to carry guns to balance it out...the criminals will stay away if they know your packing....

Heard someone say it strangely, but it stuck in my head:
"When you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have them."

First let me state this is in no way legal advice, just experience from being a long time weapons permit holder. I just scanned through most of this but would like to clear a few things up. While most states do allow concealed carry with a license it is not always as simple as a class and a fee. For example on the list above, which shows open carry laws and not permit laws, in NJ yes you can get a permit to carry but unless you are a cop, politician, or are in a threatening job (repo man, carry lots of cash) , or have been raped it's not gonna happen. NC on the other hand is a "must issue state" where if you pass a required background check and take a safety class they have to issue you a carry license (which is good in 37 states btw). Some states like Alaska have no permit laws and allow you to carry freely. Now there are some exceptions which apply to almost all states such as if you are at a place that requires admission you may not carry a weapon in there (movies, concerts, and other events). Most states you are not allowed to carry in a Bar either or a restaraunt with an attached bar (TGIF) whether you are drinking or not. Same goes for government property and schools. Also if a establishment has a sign that complies with federal regulations that states you are not allowed to bring a weapon inside you can be arrested and charged if you do, same goes if a place doesn't have a sign but if the establishment notices your weapon and asks you to take it out same rules apply.

All good information. I guess I should have put a disclaimer on my post as well. I am certainly not an authority when it comes to gun laws.

I guess what it comes down to is that each state is different in what they allow and where. Strangely enough Indiana doesnt have a restriction on bars or alcohol. They do have a no carry policy for the state fair grounds but only during the state fair. ;)

Wow no restriction on alcohol? Every state that i've carried in if you've had just one drink (usually just a sip) you are no longer allowed to carry a weapon.

Well I won't guarantee those statements are still valid, I believe they are. The problem with gun laws is they aren't all located in one place and are ever changing. People like to stick them in all sorts of weird places in other laws in hopes they slip through unnoticed.

I normally try to stick to ingunowners.com forums for general information and summaries of the laws. The post that I was going by actually dates back to 2008 so take it with a grain of salt.
