RF excited CO2 lasers

Ok, I got we got the second laser going, and it is now under my friends tree! lol! Now I can play with my first laser and get it finished. :D :D I'm sure y'all were wondering where I went. :) I think I am going to rebuild mine in a clear plastic tube similar to the way Mike did his... It just looks so much cooler than my wooden box, but I think I'm gonna use different battery's.

Mine is in 2" PVC pipe with a formed aluminum housing under. yours can be different depending on materials available. The battery (energy cells!) will be glued to the sides to look futureistic.

Another neet option given to me by someone in a earlier post is to use a 36 volt cell pack. If you used the drill handle for the trigger assembly, it would make for easy change power packs.

Yes! that would be very cool! (drill handle with battery) I have to wait till I get some more money to buy anything else, Christmas has been a little tough this year! Plus, I started another project to build an internet rover with a roboteq controller in it, HMM... I could build it so it has a co2 laser in it... now that would be different. (and dangerous). :o Hmm, I could use one of those toy phaser rifles also... 8-)
 
I love that 36 volt pack in screw gun handle ideal I wish I could afford a 36 volt screwgun with two batteries in it that would be very Sweet!!! :D
 
Well I made mine portable, and I can also, with four easy screws mount the 30 volt power supply back on in about 5 minutes.... Im powering my driver/ pwm with a cr123, batt, and powering the power supplier/ (amp) with eight 18650's in an aluminum tube that fits the batteries perfectly, the only down fall is my test on the power meter shows I only put out a measly 3 watts instead of the usual 7 watts that I get with the 30 volt 12 amp power supply. I havent checked my amp draw yet but Im burning plywood with instant glow and a good amount of smoke, the laser runs much cooler, fans are not required at this lower power output, Ive got a big big grin on my face, its so cool to be portable, definatly going to invest in a 36 volt dewalt screw gun with two batteries :D :D :D :o :oMERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL :)
 
NightS --- Where did you get the 18650's??? Are they protected? That's what mine did untill I removed those little boards.

My batteries are not protected I harvested them out of a new lap top battery, but they all have the little burrs on them from pulling off the metal connecting strapping. so im thinking Im not getting the current I need. Im gona check the amp draw now ;) I checked amp draw with an anolog meter and Its showing 9 amps draw this probably is fine the batteries are not fully charged a little weak.. I draw 13 amps off the 30 volt powersupply so maybe I should double stack my batteries instead of putting them all in one long tube, :)
 
OK -- What's your no load voltage in the series of cells? I read 33.5 on mine when fully charged.

Mine drops down to 26 but since then I have triedmy screw gun batteries and my load voltage with them is 30 they are working great in series 18 volt batteries I know that seems like alot but under load the voltage is 30 every thing is running fairly cool and my charger will charge them in 20 min. im getting 6 t0 7 watts on my meter comparable to my plug in power supply :D :D :D

I have a feeling that with a little spraypaint and maybe some decals it could look pretty crazy ;D
 
With everything folded up, I may need to retune it but I'm having fun now.   The coax is folded inside the barrel beside the tube but away from the antennas.  Maybe Chris can comment about the need to tune.
I'm reading 4 watts low and ~ 13 watts high -- My power meter gets crazy up there!   I also need to add grounding between the Laser tube base and the driver.  That seemd to help before assembly.

Chris -- have you ever shortened the coax lead for an application like this?
