Green Laser Leads to Rescue of Oahu Diver Lost at Sea

KAENA POINT (HawaiiNewsNow) - Posted: Nov 03, 2013 2:21 AM CST - An experienced diver is glad to be back at home after drifting at sea for eight hours off Kaena Point. Shining a laser at an aircraft is usually a crime, but this time it helped a Coast Guard crew find him.

"With how dark it was last night, it would have been impossible to see him unless we were right on top of him, knew exactly where he was. The way were able to find him so quickly was because he had some kind of signaling device," said Lt. Chris McAndrew of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Wow, that's awesome. So was the laser in the water with him? I'm surprised the laser didn't die.

Good story!
It's too bad the media probably won't cover this one to death, like they do for the dumb ass's who lase planes for fun.

It looks like a 5mW greenie made for diving. Z-bolt used to sell those (they might still have them).

Three cheers for Ron Hip Hip Hooray Hip Hip Hooray Hip Hip Hooray

He pointed his laser at a helicopter and now his butt is saved

One for the books...

EDIT: it kinda makes me want to build my own water proof green laser.

Right , with s.o.s. and strong enough to start a camp fire.

I carry my own waterproof 100mW greenie in my EDC pouch. Have for years, I literally check the batteries every time I leave with it. People ask me why I tell them if I was cast away when he was peeing on the beach that boat would have seen me... I hope they would have.

Good find.

Great story, glad we finally have a positive story to counter all the negative ones. Great find as well, you sir are getting re'ped.

Great find. Finally a positive laser story.

This news is good. Didn't realise madmacmo had posted it earlier. There was another good rescue 3 yrs ago on land in UK with the aid of a red laser : HERE
Grandfather, father and 13 yo son lost in UK marshes used a red laser pointer to alert the Medway Coast Guard - "Thames Coastguard were busy this evening coordinating the rescue of a father (58), grandfather (72) to a 13 year old boy, attempting to get back to firmer ground from a vessel they had left at Stoke Creek on the River Medway after the water intake on the engine had silted up. The individuals had become stuck at around 9.30pm and had abandoned their vessel to walk back across the marshes, but they had become increasingly disorientated and bogged down as the darkness fell. The emergency call to Thames Coastguard was made by the wife of one of the men, who had been contacted by her husband. Fortunately the small group had a red laser pen which they used to guide the aircrew Team to their position. Just before 11.00 pm all three had been found after the red laser pen beam had been spotted."
