Reputation system: meaning & value

As rep points is naturally a larger number then we'll have to start by estimating that maximum instead of rep power; as I believe that both integers will have the same max value. We are seeing 5,000,000+ points now. And as everything is usually in binary quantities then (2^15)-1 is ruled out as that would only give 32,767 points. The next is 32 bit: (2^31)-1 with a max of 2,147,483,647 points. If this is the max, then we would have to assume that 21,474,836 is highest rep power someone can have.
Now if we on the off-chance happen to have 64 bit integers, then (2^63)-1 would see a value of 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 points and a max rep power of ... 92,233,720,368,547,758!
I'm going to put my bet on 32 bit. :p
But the chances of any of us reaching the limit is incredibly low, as I can't seriously see the mods letting us post with 21,000,000 rep power now can you? :D
I can see it... but then again I'm an optimist..:yh:

Well, unless they want to out of curiosity sake that is. :p
 Please let us!

Ditto the above and it seems to an an activity everyone enjoys what with the badges and all and it still serves as a guide of sorts as well just bigger numbers and to indicate who is currently contributing --- the only real difference it that someone with a massive number of +reps carries a bigger stick both positive and negative rep-wise than used to be the case.

I see it as all good fun--has never turned ugly--serves the purpose of enjoying the rep activity itself and it also serves the purpose of people making better quality posts and more of them that will get +rep as well--to some degree also...is about participation in few a positive ways--so...
^^This^^
The rep party spreading has brought some fun into the forum. Its brought out many of members personality and fun loving side that has led to some very good posts. Exactly like Encap said, nothing ugly has come of it and till only of lately has wev'e gone back to a few neg reps that just needed to happen.
Rep at first when I joined was yes higher in well seasoned and knowledged members but also "to me" a snobbier statistic for some to exploit.
New members might climb up quickly but as a whole we all know who is who or catch on quickly to their motives.
Believe me when I say I used be wary at first for even giving a rep as being new I wasn't sure if my opinion mattered. That's how it use to be or at least seem.
Why change as its working out well for know anyways and bonding a forum:)

Totally agree with this and Encap! +rep to both of you when I can. :p

If we use the rep system to judge a members worth to the forum I think it needs to be caped but that is my opinion and opinions are like ass holes every one has one. If we use to as a way to see if the post is a contribution to the forum then it still needs a cap. If it used to say that you like what that person or persons said then no it does not need a CAP. Its a way to say i agree or its like a slap on the back for a well said post or not! I know I say some off the wall stuff but that is just me

I'd be surprised if it were capped, seems no one in admin cares to stop the numbers from growing. In my opinion, the whole rep system can go, but a lot of folk are having fun with it. I wouldn't want to spoil the light hearted fun going on right now to see the numbers rocket so fast.

Scrap the rep system. It has been run into the ground, and fake internet points should not be the motivation to post anyway.

If you think we post just for rep then that is not the case. It is a nice system that admittedly is getting a bit wild. But rather than taking it too seriously, many here have embraced it and had some fun doing so. Whether you haven't posted much over the last few years and only have rep in the hundreds or post regularly with rep in the thousands. It doesn't make no difference and my respect is still down to the individual not the rep power.

I think it's healed the forum.
I joined in mid 2014 and I came in at the tail end of the 'bad' period.
But I did catch part of the VG saga.
Then there was Isaac Clarke and friends.
Not to mention the MrJoker episodes.
The forum didn't seem like a kind friendly place to visit back then.

Mr Alaskan changed all that, for the better imho.
We don't post for the sake of it, we're not a bunch of Accu's. :D
It's turned into a nice place, well moderated and the reps are given out freely and actually even noob can build up quickly if they post sensible content.
I believe if you post regularly you can build up quickly.
But post nonsense and you'll receive those red bars in a flash.
I like the forum now, it's brought everyone (the regulars) closer and we've gotten to know each other much better now.

Anyway, with the Aussie dollar being were it is now, that's just my AU$0.02c worth.

You made a thread in the vets section ranking members based of off rep points. You made it into a competition, and even if you admit or not not, those inflated numbers have a bias effect on what other readers think of that individual.

In the past the rep system was being used to slap members around because only a couple of active members had much, now they can't bully with threat of negging, too many have high reps who can easily replace the lost points now.. What I originally wanted was the rep system to be done away with, but since that wasn't happening I worked hard for a couple of years strait to cause this rep inflation and it worked, no more rep control of members by someone who could take away too many points.

I do think the forum is better, now we have less negative responses a newbies question when it was perceived as something they could have searched the forum for, the slap upside the head responses to newbies was too harsh a couple of years ago. I say that when I need to improve my own behaviour when I think someone is a sock, but I've been doing better in regard to that, at least, outside the vets section.

At this point I don't know what is best regarding reps, or no reps, but I do believe some of us are having fun with it. I normally only rep active members who have been in the forum long enough to prove they aren't some banned members sock, for that I am surely missing an opportunity to spread the plus pats on the back around, but in time as I get to know new members I begin repping them too. Maybe the solution is to stop calling them reps? Calling them something else?
