Pulse Laser Rifle: Fiction-Theory-Reality?

I think the closest thing to a laser weapon that can be built yourself would be a moderately powerful CO2 laser with power supply. Surely, it wouldn't be a handheld device like a gun, but it would at least be luggable. I'd imagine the actual laser being shoulder mounted and the power cells in a backpack in such a scenario.

With such a device you could have sustained power output in the 100W range for quite some time, which is enough to do serious damage.

It's not practical however, since it would do little more damage that a handgun - at many times the cost and weight.
 





Shoulder mounted....cmon. 100W on your shoulders...you have to be able to wield this thing around as safely as possible. Carrying it in your own 2 hands is dangerous enough dont you think?
 
It doesn't take much to drive everyone off topic here, you can usually just ignore the irrelevant stuff and try to pick out the good stuff .

Ansel, I do agree with your opinions and Germany is an amazing country for technology. Look at the autobaun, look at German optics look at the automobile and precision engineering, they are the best in the world.

To all the Americans, I don't hate the US and neither does Ansel, he just made a very valid point but not an attack. US seems to repeat a lot of mistakes and we ALL end up paying dearly for them. I like Americans but the previous government did damage to the American image overseas, this has been so evident in Korea, unfortunately.


Regarding the A-bomb, it was unfortunatly a needed evil due to what happend as a direct result of Japan's imperialism during the second world war. I could go on about history but rather not...

Regardless, let's stop this petty bickering, we need to remain strong and unifed as laser hobbists because we run the risk of loosing this hobby by over zealous governments.
Ie) you are missing the bigger picture of how close we all are of loosing this hobby.
 
I guess one risk is that people perceive lasers as tools of evil and destruction if the american military deploy them on a wide scale.

This might seem ridiculous, and if you ask me, it is... but it also IS the way people think sometimes - look at the debates about nuclear power, where the opposers always compare a power plant to a nuclear bomb when describing the dangers.

As far as european vs american technology goes: i think the levels are quite comparable, but the focus is different. Mostly, its a joined effort between many continents though, never forget that. The processor in your pc was probably designed in the US, the actual chip die produced using a dutch-designed (asml) lithographic process, and the final packaging done in the far east. All the components are shipped from the far east to eastern europe (or latin america) for assembly, and the whole computer ends back up in your hands... this is synergy, not rivalry.
 
Dont care what anybody says. Over here its forbidden to go outside and play with ANYTHING beyond 5mW! But at home I can do what ever the heck I want.
 
Suppose that varies by country.

As far as i know here in holland i can shine around anything any any power level, as long as it doesnt pose a hazard to others - which sounds fair enough.

Governments see lasers as a potential threat to airlines and people on the ground. UN no doubt will try and forbid us the right to have these.

Look what they did with reloading powder and primers a few years ago!

--> follow history and it will eventually repeat itself.
