Pressing the diode into the aixis housing.. little problem there

hi!

today my 2 lasediodes arrived and i want to press them in an aixis housing. but there is a little problem. the diodes has at the back an isolation. this can you see at this picture:

so i cant use the back of the second part of the aixis housing (case for driver or similar) to press with it the diode into the lenspart. (the normally way if i dont have a special tool from it like here in the forum, if you know what i mean)

now im helpless and dont know how i can do this now.

You are supposed to pull the insulation off AFAIK

but don't listen to me as I am not 100% sure. However, I have never seen a build when someone kept the pininsulators on. You don't need them.

I would not do anything until someone else seconds my opinion.

They are only used to center and align the pins in the correct orientation in the projector. Just pull the pink spacer off.;)
 
Be careful, those pins can be fragile. On my A140, I straightened out the pins (barely any adjustment needed, but I wanted to make sure that spacer slid off perfectly), and gently slid the spacer off. I used very very little force, barely enough to pick up the diode, but somehow managed to snap a pin off.

I was able to fix it, but had to change how my build was wired, and as a result, I now have to always remember to install the battery backwards :mad:
 
@Tmack: I didn't test it yet and I don't have a LPM. Next time i'll order an laboratory power supply unit to test the diodes.
 
A diode-press is a great investment if you're not buying pre-pressed modules. Pressing diodes into Aixiz modules is terrible using the old method where you turn the screw-on housing backwards and use the hole to try and push the diodes in. It usually ends up bending the screw-on housing itself and the diode is pushed in at some weird angle that you have to correct with pliers.
 
I have a bent housing or 5 laying in my goody box lol. I'm just going to grab the entire set of presses and extractors.
 
This happened to me before when I was building one. All I did is I Expanded the hole in the back of the aixiz housing (I do not have a diode press) with a screw, and the pin spacer should fit in pefectly then used the housing to bin the diode. I prefer the pin spacer kept on there because it protects the leads from being bent. :)

I'd forgotten about these! using a nice diode press like the ones FP makes will just about guarantee that your diode is pressed in the center and not crooked.

I've NEVER gotten the back of the aixiz module method to work properly. It always ends up with a crooked diode. The module back piece deforms before enough pressure to press the diode, leaving the diode partially pressed in, and often crooked.
 
While you can use things like a bike brake adjustment part or a socket that fits just around the pins-- a REAL pressing set (and a removal tool also) is a good idea and Jeff makes nice ones.

Three things-- the pink spacer comes off easy IF you have very little solder left on the pins-just do not overheat trying to remove the solder.
Be very careful that you do NOT get any of that thermal paste I see in your pics anywhere near your lens or the diode window-
