Power Meter Calibration and Comparison

Yeah... I guess I am a little anxious. Lol... Remember that I was going to be first on the list, but then the list got changed.

I also just wanted to let pullbangdead know that I am ready to pay the shipping too. This is a good reminder for everyone... that the receiving person pays the shipping.

Hydro, what meter did you use for the third reading? the same as for the second?

Yes, it was done with the 365. I updated the spreadsheet to refect this.

pullbangdead, just checking in to see if you got the test lasers from hydro yet...

Just let me know how much the shipping is to me and I will PayPal you right away!

Delivery Confirmation said it got there on 10/24/08.

10/24? Woe... that was a Friday two weekends ago! I hope everything is ok. Anybody heard from pullbangdead?

I'm here, got the lasers ok, but still catching up with some other things. I had a midterm last week (statistical mechanics and thermodynamics/thermal physics) and have another the day after tomorrow on Wednesday (diode lasers and photonic integrated circuits, although the work is not nearly as fun as the subject).

I put them on the meter here, and now trying to get to the post office before they close tomorrow or the next day. Everything is safe, just a few days behind because my schedule with midterms and such didn't mesh at all with my officemate who controls the lab equipment. No worries, It'll be out the door to you soon.

I'm a bit concerned about the bluray laser. Initially I was ok with the reading being 75mw as it was still pretty close to the 100mw target and would still give us a better understanding of the correction factor needed for the optical meters. However since my initial reading it looks as if the laser has dropped in current or whatever that has resulted in dropping the power. 60mw or slightly above is almost half of what I wanted the laser at. I'm pretty sure when I get the laser back that my meter will show the same readings that everyone else has gotten (if not then I have some tweaking to do) but I think it is barely sufficient for our needs. Igort's initial argument was to keep it above 100mw as it was easier to determine meter efficiency over 100mw. I know that it can still be used but not as efficiently. Well, needless to say, the experiment is underway and changing the laser would nulify the experiment but after I get it back, I plan on replacing the rckstr driver and pushing it back over 100mw.

I'm just glad that this is finally under way and is moving smoothly.

Jay, could you make a trip down to your local ace hardware and pick up some caps like this:

I will compensate you. They are only like $4 or so but I forgot to put a pair of these on the lasers before they shipped. There is one size that fits but it does need to be sanded inside the cap just a tiny bit in order to fit over the laser heads.

If you need me to send you another driver, let me know.  Once I get the lasers, I could just stick the new driver in the box and you'll have it when it finally gets back to you.

That sounds like an excellent deal there rckstr. I put that new pot on there but even at it's highest setting wasn't getting any more power out of it. so I'm inclined to believe something else is broken. However since we are getting a stable output, I'm gonna leave it be until this is done. Hope nobody decides to keep it though... We are all trustworthy right!!! LOL

Jay, thanks much I appreciate it. The antistatic bags that the lasers are in provide protection from dust while the lasers are being shipped and while not being used but it's a lot more convenient to have the caps on them so that we can just pop them on right after use.

Jay, here is what your lookin for at Ace. it's a 1" cap.

@rckstr, you could make the driver with no pot at all, and then change the parallel or series resistor to something that will cause it to regulate something between 120 and 140 mA.

That isn't a problem for me, but I think Kenom was trying to set it at a specific power, requiring adjustment of the current until it reached 100mW, correct?

indeed. I have to have the ability to adjust the power. I don't set my lasers to a specific current. I set my lasers to a specific output.
