Pioneer 8X Blu-Ray-- BDR-203

They are two different diode brands for one thing...

But even when comparing my diode against the other BDR diodes so far, mine is lower in efficiency.

We get this with other blu-ray diodes as well. Like the PHR's and even the 6X diodes. Some are higher in efficiency than others. Igor's first 6X was a low efficiency diode. But it is also a very 'tough' and long lasting diode! :)

Hopefully my 8X BDR is that way...

As soon as I have sold off enough of my PHR stock, (And get a 405-G-1) then I will be joining the group. And, like WannaBurn, I am working on a boost driver for this output level (I need one for a seperate LED-based project, but it shouldn't be too hard to adapt it...)

Sadly, I don;t expect we will see any of these drivers produced for a few months.
 
Jack89: If you are offering something for sale it should go in the buy/sell/trade section of the forum. If you want help identifying your sleds you should post a new thread on the help/tutorials section of the forum. Please do not spam random threads with pictures of your sleds.

Good work on that compilation of data for the 8x.  I used that tonight.

I received my "203" today and it looks like Dave's except for the IR part which looks more like a sensor.

I removed the 405 and noticed that there was a microscopic crack in the window.  May be me or the fact that it is " refurbished".  Oh well.

Just kidding... I'm plenty happy with the power! Man, if you got that baby in a Kryton, you better watch your fingers at that power! Kind of hard to focus a Kryton without getting your fingers in the way huh?

I could make something up especially for your Kryton Mike... (oh wait a minute, you have a lathe) Check this out...

Do you have the focus ring on there? Because I was thinking that an o-ring/press on type thing, like this little fiber optic pencil idea that I was experimenting with:

It just pushes onto an AixiZ focus ring and stays on very well. It has room in the side wall thickness to fit inside the Kryton head! :)

So you could easily make it fit the same way with the o-ring, but the part on the outside, could be about the same size in diameter, as the Kryton head. Now the I.D. of the Kryton heads, are the same for both the Groove as well as the 1st run Krytons, but the O.D. is a different size, so it would have to be sized for either a Groove, or a 1st run Kryton! ;)

I will make an extender on my lathe. It's too hard to adjust the focus with that G1 lens while it's on. My fingers get too hot ;D Others might appreciate the extention.

Thank you Mike. With your data, I have tried to trace an "efficiency comparison" of the various 8x diodes. With the exception of Intro74 diode, the efficiency of which looks to be abnormal (does it comes from a different manufacturer?) the other diodes are quite lined-up (I have traced an "average line").... see the annex. As Quantile data have been recorded with an Aixiz acrylic (not the 405G1) lens, the slope of the average line will change.....

Concerning the focusing ring extension, it's a really good idea also in case of less powerful lasers... I remember that IgorT has shown something similar in one of his pictures.... an extension having quite the same external diameter of the host.... maybe these extensions are already available from him....
 
@ FrankoRob: Nice graph but there is one fundamental flaw: to compare efficiency you can't compare different mA levels - since laser diodes change their efficiency at various current levels, (and temperature age, etc). The best way of doing this comparison would be to get readings at identical levels - say a reading at 100, 200, 300 and 350mA. If everyone is willing to do this, then this comparison could really help us to get a better understanding of these diodes.

Yes, you're right, the term "comparison" is not right, this graphic give a simple visual overview of the "points" relevant to the data (mW/mA) that the diode owners declare in this Forum. Of course I'm available to plot a new graphic as the data you suggest will be available, also if the results will still not be completely comparable, (different drivers, different Power meters, etc.).
In the meanwhile, I'm going to upgrade the datasheet with Mike and I'll move there also this point plot graphic.... :)
 
Had a busy time at work - no time to play with lasers, so my 405-G lens had to sit on the desk for a week :(
