Oh crap, a really mean Canadian

Those statistics are still incorporating all violent crime. I'm not sure why this constant repetition is necssary, but for the 4th or 5th time I'll say that what I'm talking about doesn't apply to any but the very worst crimes involving murder. The murder rate has held nearly flat for the entire time period shown in that graph.

Yeah Rape and Murder are just about flatlined on that
graph...

So what area on the Globe does the Graph represent..

I took it from Wiki... not exactly a source to put a lot of faith in for a proper analysis.

Pretty sure those were the statistics reddish was referring to. Could be wrong though.

When viewing charts like that, you absolutely always have to consider the irrelevant data, and how it was compiled.

For example rudy giuliani was credited with cleaning up New York, and to a degree he did. What's rarely talked about is that the way crimes were reported also changed. For a time if you were found with a knife wound in the back, it would have been deemed a suicide - not a homicide...

the US, I pulled data from the report off a pda from the FBI, they have some estimates on 2011 though they will not release the 2011 until the end of the year. So I went state to state, it does vary quite a bit, it "seems" like they are still dropping but a few states are reporting a rise. Also many on this forum will be glad to know that Canada is safer than the US and the US regardless of 2010 2012 has still dropped 40% give or take 8%, since the 90s.

Anyone ever meet a mass murderer? Not me though I met more than a few crazy folks, to include David Koresh. We have Nidal Malik Hasan here in Ft Hood as the worst thing since George Hennard shot up a Luby's, I dated this Hennards niece BTW for about 3 months. All I am saying is how would torturing George Hennard, have stopped Hasan? Never mind the fact he commited suicide at the time of the crime.

Also edit, that graph is not a flat line, the number of murder and rape compared to all other violent crime is so low the graph has poor resolution.

Yep I got to meet Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer a couple times when he come to see his mother even shook his hand. I knew he was strange but had know idea weird. His mother lived 5 doors down from me she was a very nice lady. The other one was Max Frank I did a service call ( i am a electrician) at his house scary place.

Beware of the confounding variable ;)

There are several reasons why the crime rate is dropping even though the economy is in the crapper. Here are a couple of the reasons discussed

We are getting older. The "bump" in the birth rate after the end of Vietnam caused a bump in the number of 15-25 year old men that peaked around 1990. 15-25 year olds are the main perpetrators of crime. The median age of males in the US is now closer to 35. It is simply that the number of potential criminals declined, therefore crime declined

Video games are keeping 15-25 year olds in the house more. As video games became more popular, more young men stayed indoors, playing them. The age of "gamers" has now moved up into the mid 20's. Young men, sitting on a couch, staring at a video screen, are not out perpetrating violent crime

Lots of politicians take credit for reducing the crime rate, but the causes are almost completely out of their hands ;)

Peace,
dave

I have no remorse for the guy who died and no anger toward the dad, other than that I do not know what to say other than he was well within his right to protect his family.
