i bought a phr diode off ebay on impulse a couple weeks ago.  while waiting for it to arrive, i found this site, and soaked up lots of good info.  i built a driver and lit the thing up.  it was pretty sweet.  i figured i should build a spiro with it.  i cobbled this together with parts on hand.  it fits nicely in the altoids tin, and projects a cool shifting violet spiro on my celing from my desk.

Are they self cut glass mirrors?

Very nice! What power is that diode running? cause I have a 'pocket' spiro that I am trying to build, but I am going to have to heatsink the module otherwise it would just overheat the diode if I ran it for any length of time.
 
thanks guys.  i did cut the mirrors myself, from regular glass mirror.  i had intended to replace them with first surface mirrors, but found they worked great.  i don't see any "ghosting" of the pattern.  the diode is running at about 50ma, and doesn't get warm at all.  i've cranked it up a bit more for longer distances, and didn't notice any heat there either.  the motors were taken from two small servos.  they have a small metal gear on the shaft that makes it easier to glue the mirrors.  the tin was etched with salt water and electricity some time ago, and had previously been used to hold various small electrical components.

edit: i have also been thinking of adding a third spinning mirror. has anyone seen any examples of the pattern produced with 3 mirrors? i'd like to know what that might look like.

WOW That's Cool! I have a 405nm Laser and I tried it on a 2 mirror Spiro, That looks pretty nice! Congrats a lot!
 
haha sweet! Do you have the LD driver on the same pcb as the motors' circuit? Or do you have a flex drive hidden in the module? Either way.... very nice!!

the laser driver is in the middle, just right of the 9v. it was built on a small piece of perfboard and attached to the larger one. i intend (eventually) to make a smaller driver that will fit inside the laser housing. then i will replace the AA battery with a voltage regulator powered from the 9v. this will give me considerably more room to add more mirrors, etc.
