Here’s an UltraFire C3 I bought from deal extreme several months ago. It arrived DOA. Waited 5 weeks for it too >(
What better than to turn it into a laser...Duh...
I’ve had a diode from a BDR-208bk for quite a while... Lifetime17’s heatsink was the final touch:)

THIS WAS A HARD BUILD because of the very compact area to work with. And soldering this very tiny Flexdrive was an experience. I set the driver to 500mA. Not sure of the output as I don’t have a LPM.
But it burns deliberately.

Hope you enjoy!!

Nice! Perfect little burner:)
I realize the need to insolate the driver and running at only 500mA but will it be a issue as far as keeping in heat?

The diode has plenty of heatsink. 500mA is less that half of the driver’s ability and its adhered to the pill. Should be ok though I think:)

That's a nice little EDC 405nm burner you've built, SGD!
It's nice to see the in-process pics, as everyone does things a bit differently.

Your last beam shot pic is looking good because in addition to the beautiful 405nm beam, I see green grass and leaves on the trees; I can't wait for spring to arrive here, we've had enough snow! :yh:
:gj: +rep asap!

PS - I like the obituary in your signature. It shows that although you've suffered a big loss, you're thoughtful enough to be an organ doner. ;)

Sorry your c3 was doa. But think you resurrected just fine.

Looks like a might fine build. Soldering onto these tiny little boards can be an exercise in patience. But it looks like you did a great job. Like the use of the shrink tube on the driver, interesting little twist. :gj:

Thx, fellrs!! It’s a neat build for sure. The power is quite elusive. This is my first 405nm.
Jeff, the shrubs stay green here. I don’t miss that kind of cold though :). Now, 48 at night feels freezing to me. Speaking of EDC, I’m waiting to see that streamlight you’re supposed to produce :D

Bob, yeah I wasnt too mad. Just threw it in the laser TTD pile. Thanks again!!

Hi Shotgun
Nice build and a 405 to glad you heat sinks worked out for you buddy. I think that was the smallest sink I had ever machined . But the measurments had to be on spot . Nice build thread with the flex drivers I have two I didn’t use them yet

Very nice review of this build, Josh. I'm always anxious when I see these high power SM diodes in a small build. I would be conscious of the run times as many of these diodes have died a premature death here. At least you didn't try to go for more than 500 mA as I doubt it would survive long. Thank you for sharing your build procedure with us. + rep. :yh:

Thanks, Rich!! The heatsinks fit and seem to be working out great! This is the larger of the two. I still have one more smaller one to go ;). This Flexdrive’s pot adjustments were very finite. Bridging the three micro size resistors
and adjusting the pot ever so slightly were the hardest parts of the build I think.

Thanks, Paul. This build helped put my wits at ease after the red diode nose dive  I’ve read much on these 405s and it seems 500mA is plenty for longevity. I’ll probably keep the cycles very short too.

Glad y’all enjoyed and Thx for the kudos too :D.

It's satisfying to have all that power in a tiny device, isn't it? Nice work.
I've missed this wavelength. I'll have to add it to my collection again. The fluorescence makes it really fun.

That's true. Nothing like having a blacklight laser. I have a few. Need to get some more. ;)

Yes it is!! It’s a powerful little sucker that’s for sure. I don’t know the power output. So, I threw an approximation at it given what I’ve seen others post output-wise at 500mA. I wanna get my hands on one of the multimode 405s now.

Thx Richie! How’s OK? I almost got sent out there for a bit. But, they needed me here and are sending someone else... shucks.
I’d be tempted to take ya up on that kind offer if it weren’t across the pond. There’s extra scrutiny in customs :(. But thank you!!!

Nice collection you have there btw.

very nice and pocket build, you could use a bit smaller wires(in thickness) as the current is small on 405nm builds and it would be easier to fit all the parts in the host.

Thx DS
It’s funny you say that cause I thought the same while assembling. But I don’t have any of the small stuff.

Cheers
