New Mitsubishi 1.8W 638nm diode in 9mm package

Email I got on Friday August 15th:

Which was evidently a lie, because just today:

But I did receive a full refund at least. :undecided:

"big problem with the laser diode", AKA "we dont have any of these laser diodes" --??

Well That Sucks! but yea atleast you got your money back, I really hope they do tell you what happened with the diode testing or just tell us something about it! many or us are curious!

Howcome post lens corrective optics options aren't more common in the laser hobby world?
I know Anamorphic Prisms correct beams but I don't see them very often in builds. I feel like CDbeam777 would have input on this.

Yea i do recall a couple threads from CDBEAM777 about some compact corrective optics, but they havent surfaced for a while? i wonder how that little project went

People around here don't care to much about beam specs. It's all about POWARR. Besides, you lose some of the beam power and double the size and cost of the pointer. It makes more sense to incorporate corrective optics in a projector.

I have one of these big boys on the way. Im looking for corrective optics too. Surprised no one here grinds custom lenses for these diodes. Is it possible to make such a lens to correct the astigmatism?

can you reveal your source and price for this diode? is it the BEAMQ site? or?

About the correcting optics, It is actually underestimated.
There are many ways, cylindrical with long EFL, cylindrical lens pair or anamorphic prisms.

This is what I can do with my cylindrical lens at 10 meters with Oclaro diodes. Beam narrower over 3 times.

Project went as planned. See this link. http://laserpointerforums.com/f50/now-completed-optically-corrected-p73-hh-design-87235.html I have not measured at 10meters....but much , much less than 17mm. I will do this in the next few days

I am only familiar with the P-73. IMNSHO...You should use the 2mm EFL collimation lens from LSP....then the Cylinderical lens set he offers. This is the best combination to correct the P73 that we/I have found !!!

As shown by the Dragon's Head build...Adaptive/corrective optics can be built into a hand held format. It is not easy and it takes a certain host to handle the optics...but it is doable.

I also think the DH design could handle a dual build quite easily and in a rather small overall geometry.

As to the question of having a round geometry vs. a bar geometry...Corrective optics vs. no corrective optics. Well, yes...ya need more space and ya loose some power...but....the additional cylindericals likely cost about 4~5% power loss...SOOooooo... IMNSHO...I choose round...oh...and I want power too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IW of red is plenty bright at the 635nm line. The P-73 will do this with a good heat sink. Will it drop some in power after a few minutes of operation....Yeah....So ???? The DH is a Pointer, not a flashlight !! The DH build drives the P-73 at 1250 mA...yes...over the spec....again....so what...at the current daily use....the LD may burn out in 2114 AD vs 2214 AD...(yawn !! and puzzled look !!)

The take-away here is that many things are possible, not always easy, but possible !

I have seen nothing on the new 1.8W 638 Mits..ui !! It would nice to use the same corrective optics and get 1.5W out the front door !!! But so far....just "Smoke and mirrors" !!

That it true, lens just after the diode are very important. But the effect with cylindrical lens should be similar 3x.

I was playing with 1W 520nm and this lens, effect is nice because from 20x8 spot you can have around 8x8 spot. So probably with lens you are writing about it will be even better I would like to see that :)

For the power loss hmm I think 4-5 % is really a bit exaggerated. I must double check it but after first test I got <1% power loss on 2 lenses. They are AR coated and reflection is less than 0,3% in spec sheet.

Can you give me the link to LSP lens?

[...]he additional cylindericals likely cost about 4~5% power loss[...]
I just measured the lens with 1W 445nm laser. Without lens the Ophir head gave maximum readouts: 115,9 mV without cylindrica lens and 114,2 mV with cylindrical lens. So it is 1,5% loss only :) Additional lens were not perfectly clean, a bit dusty but I didn't wanted to touch them.

TS....I was going from memory on the optical loss for the cylindrical set...maybe it is the anamorphics that are around 4% ???

Anyway, the link for LSP is Lasershow Parts

They do not list the 2mm EFL Collimation lens, drop them an email for I am sure they sell them !!

I measured the P-73 at 10 M and got about 12mm wide by 7mm thick... still a rectangle....not a square !!...but less like a bar....kinda a "squished box" !! Now there is a technical nomenclature ! Hey...Ya get what ya pay for !!:san:

Damn... Got me more interested in corrective optics.

Would be dream come true for our NDB7A75s

I have a solution to this problem: hold laser in hand viewing greatest divergents. Rotate handheld unit 90 degrees till beam divergences appears to improve.

Kidding of course but yes beam correction is something that would be applicable for many diodes. Especially in the highpower blues and of course reds.
