Hey Guys (Long time no see)

So basically I'm going away in a month to uni, and need a laptop. I have a budget of £900, but spending less would be quite nice.

Ideally it would have a screen size of around 14", and not be a macbook.

I'm an engineering student, so I'd like as much power as possible (as I might dabble in some light gaming as well,) but would be willing to lose some power for a decent build quality (ie not really plasticky)

Some potential options that I have found so far:
Acer Aspire 5750G LX.RCF02.109

Plenty of power, but plasticky/low build quality

Hp envy 14
HP Envy 14-1200EA Core i5 2.66GHz Laptop Beats Sound | eBay

Looks awesome, solid build quality (aluminium), enough power, decent sound; slightly more expensive (not a problem at this price point,) less power

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks
Rob

i second lenovo. i have a desktop and my bro has thier laptop. top quality, and no flex in the keyboard when typing.

michael.

Thanks for the advice guys

There are other computers?

I knew there would be one :D
My primary reason for not wanting a mac is the price. I think they are pretty cool, and the trackpads are unrivalled, but they are just not what I want atm

Check out some. lenovos I have one and so does my dad we love them

Thanks for the advice. I have looked at lenovo laptops (specifically thinkpads,) but hated the tiny trackpad. I'll have a look at their other models.

Anything else to consider?

Thanks
Rob

edit:

So I found what appears to be the perfect laptop for me:
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/builder.workflow:Enter?mtm-item=%3A000000F3%3A00004496%3A

But they don't ship to the uK, and its not available here either :/

I'll have to see if I can find someone order it for me and ship I reckon

I like dell laptops... I am not a fan of their desktops.. I don't know if Lenovo is as good as the old IBMs used to be but if they are than they are a winner too though usually more expensive than Dell.

Alienware makes some high end gaming laptops with some really cool cases and stuff might be worth checking out... I know they are pretty expensive though... Not sure if it will fit your budget or not.

Rob, get something that will fit your needs for now. Don't invest a lot on something that will get old in the next year or 2. You might need to buy something else to fit your future needs later ;)
