Re: New Boost Driver in Dev *Asking for investors*

The inductors are usually more of an issue than resistor tolerances.

Re: New Boost Driver in Dev *Asking for investors*

I will bring this all up with the engineer tonight. I am going to have an interview with him in 3 hours, so please stay tuned. This is my first interaction with an electronic engineer and I'm going off his advice. So if you think this is the incorrect way of doing things I will pull him up on it and converse with you guys as well.

Just a few more questions...

Are you also getting the PCB Artwork... Gerber Files and final
working schematics ??
Are you also getting a Parts list C/W suppliers ??

Another thing... Make sure that the circuit is not straight out
of a Data Sheet/Book or you are paying for something that
is essentially free....

Am I the only one who noticed for $1100 he's making 5-10 boards?

I think that's because the majority of the price is the engineering. After that its 15-20 per. I think..

Yes as well as a patent on the design.
What does C/W stand for? But yes I will be getting a parts list, all components and data on all of it will be available to me.

Cam453, That's the first batch of prototype boards I was referring to. Once the prototypes go through testing and have been signed off then I will start mass production of the driver. My first batch for sale will be approx 1500 boards to start with. From there if I need to add extra features (eg modes) then that will be included in the next version of the board.

I think that's because the majority of the price is the engineering. After that its 15-20 per. I think..

ITman496, That is correct. According to the engineer the lab time involved cost $89/h + labor. So as you can see things get a bit pricey quickly. He is also doing me a deal as I have helped him in the past, so he hasn't charged me a retainer fee... which will ultimately reduce the final price of the driver even more.

I would love to see this come to fruition. Dont have a lot in my laser budget at the moment as I have some up coming life expenses so I wont be able to invest. I will however buy quite a few of these things once they are here in physical form.

Yep we need a new boost drive. I realised I was too stupid to spend $30 on a laser driver, especially when I was able to make my own.

Yeah, I know what you mean. If the drivers do end up being 15-20 dollars, I nearly guarantee they will sell like hotcakes ;)

$1100 sounds like a lot, but I'm not into these prices anyway. My electronic knowledge is just the first year of the Electronic Engineering study here. Quite usefull, but not on the level of designing switchmode stuff yet. Maybe I'll continue the study someday.

At $15 you better make a thousand because you wont even be able to keep up with the orders. I dont think there is anything this hobby is in more need of than an affordable 2W boost driver.

I know what you mean. Thats why I'm gonna order them now so I don't run into a 'I need a driver but they are out of stock' moment.

Re: New Boost Driver in Dev *Asking for investors*

So you want to order a driver... that hasn't even made it out of a simulator yet? Brave indeed. And anyone who's tried to design a ultra small form factor high current DC-DC converter before knows why.

When I said now I meant when its first released. :p Sorry for the confusion.
