New 473 diode Led Lenser mod

What I'm gonna do is subject the 474.5 I have to as much [ab]use as I can do with the nano driver. Long duty cycles, lots of off and on in short intervals, that kind of thing. I'm really hoping that it lives through that so that I don't need to worry about accidentally killing the 480.2nm I have. Even if I have to scale it down to suggested operating current; that's not one I want dying. Whenever I get that driver, the test shall begin.

I don't imagine too many people will be upset about the 474.5 being abused like this. More tests are always good; and this should cover the most extreme case...

I don't think these are in limited production; though they aren't as easy to source as what we're used to on the forums. At least it's not like it was back when 405's came out and people tore down PS3's to get them...
 





Sad to see the loss of one of these diodes so soon.. Now i'm really glad I set mine to a conservative 200mA instead of closer to 300mA. Hopefully it was a fluke of some sort and not these being as picky as some of the higher power 405nm diodes when overdriven.

By abuse, do you mean you are going to set the driver to 500 mA? Or are you leaving it at 275 mA and just using it a lot? I'll be curious to know exactly what you do and how it turns out.
 
Keeping the 275mA. I'm still not going to touch any soldering after what happened last weekend. Just lots of use.
 
Just got a message about a boost driver set to 350 mA. I think I will stick to my original plan and set mine there. I'm still thinking that the failure was a one time incident and will act accordingly. I'll let everyone know if it causes a failure or not once it is up and running. I still think that 350 mA isn't driving it too hard.
 
So here's the 2nd diode it had to be pressed out of a 12mm module I had it in and pressed back into the 20mm module for my led Lenser luckily it survived that operation but as of yet I haven't decided what current to set this one maybe 200ma not sure, On advice from Jordan he's saying to stick with the nano on these single mode low power diodes not the xboost mini, I have a few nanos but there all set to the 550ma range so this rebuild might not be finished for a while a little disappointing as I'm missing the wavelength already.

Very nice diode. I just hope they won't replace 473 nm DPSS. What are the beam specs of your build?
 
Yeah I'm not the wright person to ask, but it's very decent to me even with a G2 lens although there is that strange box die reflection that we usually only see with multimode diodes!
 
Honestly the first had a bit more cyan green in it if you can't tell how excited I was at seeing the colour at the start, that diode might have been higher in wavelength and less efficient and as a result didn't survive but considering I was first planning to drive one at 500ma with the nano I don't think 300ma was extreme the colour sure was though, Even the new diode pics above do not show the colour as it is, it's much more stunning, I sure hope we can get more of these!

I have a driver coming to drive mine at 350 mA. It was pretty much what I wanted to drive it at after measuring ten of these and then seeing DTRs current vs power video. I believe yours was a bit higher in WL because it was driven at 300 mA. It might not look as good at 200 mA or even lower if you decide to go that way. It's hard to lose a diode like this so quickly and I get why you are gun shy at this point. But, there is no hurry as I hope to have mine up and running by the middle of next week. You could just wait to see if I lose mine before making that final decision. Seeing one working at an even higher current may give you the confidence to go back to 275 or 300 mA, whichever it was. :D

Yes both of my builds the 505 and the 480 are driven at 275 and 278 mA . I am pleased with the outcome and the WL color. Lets see what paul comes up with first to see if it lives or dies.
