Net finds thread, real or bogus specifications? Report the good or the bad here.

I hope it didn't cost much. If it is a labby, $50 would be reasonable for one at that power back then.

I paid 250 for it, yea, that price indicated it wasn't 1 watt too, but I was a complete noob.

Here's another ebay scammer, I'm sure of it. No way for 16 dollars will you get a 1 watt 405 nm laser head. When I see a newbie post on a product like this I often find myself questioning whether a real newbie, or the seller starting a thread here trying to drive business to his ebay link. I can question all I want, I suppose.... doesn't make it so.

There are 59 adverts for 1000mW 405nm engraving head on ebay from many different sellers at similar prices? Are they al scams and should be 100mW ?

I'd believe 500 mw for something like that, for that use, but 1000 mw? Even the "16 X" 405 nm laser diode pushed hard at 900 mw out of the lens is being abused and will die, in time. For a reliable cutting laser diode source (with what is avail now) you could never use it at 1000 mw and 100 mw seems a bit weak to me. Of course, power density is where it's at, I still wouldn't be interested in a 100 mw 405 nm cutter.

Edit: I think you meant 1000 mw, but wrote 100 mw in your post.

Yes I corrected it 1000mW---dozens of listings for them--would be interesting to find out what they really are mW -wise. Can't be 1000mW as you say

It depends on the unit and what diode they are using. I expect around 700-800mW.

700-800 at most, even then I'd be expecting failures at the high duty rate for that use. If those are the 16X BDR-209 diodes, that's a great price. I don't think they are, they could be using the 12X S06J diodes, but the price is too low for those too. Likely a far lower output 405 nm laser diode.

Well one has input specs of 5V 300mA. 5*0.3*1.5W of electrical input. Now we have to account for driver efficiency and laser diode electrical to optical efficiency. I'm now suspecting 500mW max.

I didn't think of look at that, you are right.

Edit: one of those "1000 mw" China listings says extracted from 12 X sleds, but I'd even question that, knowing these China sellers

The 12X sleds are only capable of 700 mW maximum with a good aspheric lens. Any claim of power higher than that is definitely a scam.
