My reasons for +reps

I think you should get 10 reps to give out each day for every dollar you donate each month, so if you give 5 dollars a month, you can give 50 reps a day be they negative or positive, that seems fair, so if all you do is complain about why you don't donate then you don't get to vote.

I personally don't think that would be a good idea. Donations members make to the forums is because they have gotten some valuable content out of it, met helpful people, enjoy the hobby or simply want to see the forums and it's community prosper and stay active. Making donations required to give out rep would defeat the whole purpose of reputation, meaning only people who contribute to the forums in a financial means can give reputation out.

Some members don't donate but provide tons of valuable information to others. Donating shouldn't be a requirement but a nice gesture if you feel you have gotten valuable knowledge out of laserpointerforums.com

Yes I see your point, but sometimes certain people are very knowledgeable and helpful, and they deserve the rep, often they have quite a bit anyway. I can understand not wanting people to just trade it off, but to have to find reasons to give to others sort of dilutes it's value for those who have earned it as well.

There is a balance somewhere, maybe those who donate should get an extra measure, that is if you give 5 a month you get to double rep, some kind of balance.....but I do agree, it would be wrong to exclude people who can't afford to put in money.

I don't understand the limit on how much rep can be given out in 24 hours, yesterday I gave out a few and then I got the message I cant give out any more for 24 hours, this morning I was able to give out only two reps before the system told me I have given out too much again... I thought you could give 10 reps in 24 hours?

I tested this twice a few weeks ago, it is a max of 10 a day but it's seems to not be by calendar day, it's in a 24 hour period. So for example if you rep 3 people one day then the next day it may only let you rep 7 if those 3 yesterday were within the last 24 hours. Depending on how they are spread out through the day you may not have to wait 24 hours before you can rep someone, but if you were to rep 10 in a row at once then you have to wait 24 hours.

I try to rep people when they deserve it, often it's some of the most helpful people, but I must spread rep before being able to give it to the helpful person.

I don't think I have ever given a negative rep, but maybe like youtube you can't give all positive?

Yes it can be all positive. I only neg reped twice here ever.

It kinda is. the more knowledgeable, longer term people have more rep power. so if you attract the attention of a higher member and they think your content is worth rep, you get more for your contribution, but there's the flip side to that too.

I kinda get what you're saying, but donations need to be kept out of it entirely. they're exactly what they say they are. donations. Something given with no expectation of return - supporting the forum because you like it. By doing added rep for donations then you're period bringing the power of money into the equation, which I can think of many problems that would occur from that even if its a limited thing. It's intended to be an open ended and opinionated system to begin with. It originally wasn't meant to be scrutinized so heavily...if someone thinks something is a large enough contribution/detraction, then they're able to compliment/rebuke it. its that simple. If a 'higher' member doesn't see it as rep worthy as another, especially because their opinion will weigh the scale more, then that's their opinion. For some, they're perfectly happy with a simple word of thanks anyway. Don't forget that the conversation is where the value is, not the little green squares. ultimately they're mostly just there to ID who's not a [censored] and who's helpful. everything else is in a person's profile such as their membership length. if a member is perhaps +20 in the green or more, its safe to say this person isn't a troll or something and actually worth taking seriously. anything extra, is essentially just backing up that opinion, showing that not only are they helpful, but they are regularly helpful over a long period of time, which is harder to achieve when people are not repping you on purpose because you will have to continually be bringing new things to the table, rather than just the same thing over and over, thus your rep grows faster, showing your own growth as well. It shows the concensus of the forum that a person is helpful.

For example, I only give +rep to outstanding posts. not just helpful posts. ones that go above and beyond, like a well documented experience or teardown, tutorials, etc. rather than every 'helpful' post. something with lots of details that can be used by countless people, or someone who went the extra mile to really give personal help to someone, that I found extremely helpful. I feel its important to encourage the newer members to explore and improve upon their content, and rep is important, but its likewise good not to spoil (especially new) people with too much, so that they still have room to grow, and know they have to work for it, and can grow.

Matter of choice, my choice is to rep for helpful posts, does that make my standard lower or just that I am more easily pleased? Perhaps so, but if people rep'd pluses for help more often, I bet you it would give more incentive to help members, even with the silly questions they should have googled first, but now I've opened another can of worms, never mind on that, we should goggle first, if not LPF, elsewhere. - After I started this thread my ability to +rep seems to be much lower now, what the? Maybe I'm imagining it... I will stop rep'ing for awhile and see if it really is different now. hopefully not!

I have noticed Alaskan repping me and other people for helping beginners, even if he hasn't posted in the thread, thanks for that. The system is the way it is because it avoids two people or a group of people jacking up each others reputation to seem... well... reputable, even if they're not. I find it an alright system, ita a tough one to get right. I'm not like you Alaskan, I have never run into the max rep spread in 24 hours limit, maybe I should get to spreading more , because I often run into the "you must spread some rep around before giving some to _______ again."

I'm an easy rep'er, it seems few are as easy to give out +reps, so in the long run the system is safe, I won't make that much difference but I like to see a newbie's rep climb when I can help, if they aren't an obvious troll.

Last I knew the formula for rep power looks like this:

power = int(points / 100) + int(posts / 250) + years_member

1 rep power per 100 points you have.
1 rep power per 250 posts you have.
1 rep power per year you've been a member.

I can't wait until my rep gets to 100, not for myself but for when I rep someone, their rep will actually go up. If you are under 100 rep you only give them a fraction of 1 rep so many times it does not go up

Thanks for the formulas, would rep you but couldn't lol. Same here for reaching 100 rep, sometimes I see their bar or points move up, but sometimes no, even though I'm so close. Waiting until I do another review or make some hosts to get there

I'd rather have a "done business with" section for each user. I'd like the option to list who i have personally death with. It would be optional of course but it would be nice to know. I think cool points are nice but they are cool points not a transaction history.

That's a good idea... There could be like a 'Business Quotient" bar where if you've ever sold something to someone on here, they can leave a rating and some comments specifically for buying and selling.., would give a better indication of trust from the buyer's perspective than just rep points

I just gave OVNI a rep the other day as a new member for doing nothing more than supporting another member in a thread when he congratulated him for something. As a new member with no feed back, if I see his behavior isn't that of a troll, I sometimes will give a +rep as a welcome to the forum gift. Maybe that isn't a substantial enough reason, but I ask this question, how many reps have any of us received for no other reason that someone likes what you posted, or shared. I think we all get them for such reasons and that this is what they are for, anything you want. There are no guidelines here for why you should rep someone, should there be? I don't think so.
