He (or she, I'm really not sure yet) cost $70 at a local pet store.

Indeed, I spent about two hours octo-proofing my tank before I let him in!

His mantle is about 1.75" long and his arms are about ten inches. I'm fairly certain he's a Abdopus aculeatus. I'm not really sure yet how old he is or how big he'll get, but it appears to be one of the more common species of tank kept octopus. I acquired him from a local fish store. I knew they got them in once every other blue moon, so I asked them to call me if they ever got a delivery, and when they did, I was there on my lunch break.

He's still fairly shy, all he really does is hide in his den under a rock, but he does eat well and he's starting to react positively to my presence at the tank. I knew that I was taking a risk getting a store bought octo, but he appears to be very healthy and thriving!

Get him some toys and puzzles to keep him occupied, octopi are extremely intelligent. They're like parrots; if you don't entertain them and provide them puzzles, they will get depressed.

Do they get smart enough so they recognize you, it'd be cool to play with him in a saltwater pool lol

They do get smart enough that they can recognize people! He's still really skittish around my wife, but when I come to the tank he doesn't bother to run off and hideunder a rock like he does with her (or anyone who's come over to visit). Once they get to know you, they will come up to the top to get their food, and they will grab you and investigate you. Each is different, they have their own personalities.
