My new and VERY unique pet (pics)

Yeah, that's the main problem with them. :(

If you're referring to how hard it is to maintain the water for one of these guys, yes I am aware.

If you're insinuating the creature it's self is dangerous, I believe you to be mistaken, as the only octopuses that have venom harmful to humans are the species in the genus Hapalochlaena, aka the blue rings.

BTW,

New pic. This was a troublesome $3 gourami that decided to start attacking my $40 red tail cat in the freshwater tank. It was feeding time for the octo and I had to get rid of the gourami. It seemed like a natural solution lol

Every species of octopus still have a razor sharp beak. I would suggest checking out saltwaterfish.com there is a lot of useful information there. Otherwise just disregard me :P.

wait...

A penchent for lasers, a taste for exotic pets, and no precompulsions about feeding troublesome "henchmen" to the newest exotic pet?

quadcam, you wouldn't happen to be a supervillain of any sort, would you?

Indeed! :) This guy has a really friendly disposition though, even though I do run the risk of having a slightly painful bite, I sincerely doubt he would do it. If I dip my hand in the tank, he'll come over and crawl all over it like a jungle gym. He'll take food from me. And most importantly, he doesn't have a blue ring's terrible attitude or ability to back up said bad attitude.

To tell you the truth, I'm more worried about getting scratched by one of my German shepherds when I'm playing keep away with them. ;) lol

btw, I did my learning about these guys on TONMO.

ROFL

It is a career path I've been kicking around... :D

and actually, I think this is sig-worthy!

why do they die so fast ?

Octopuses only live 1-5 years depending on their species. This is because these animals have a life cycle rather similar to insects, they're born, go through a larval stage, mature, reproduce and die. After reproduction, the males will become lethargic and die, because they have fulfilled their purpose in life. The females at this point will go to their den, lay their eggs, and stay with them to protect them, clean them and ventilate them using their siphon until the eggs hatch, at this point the mother will die.

As you can see, the reason these animals live such short lives is because of the very fundamental yet profound difference in the basis of their body structure compared to ours. While these may be very intelligent animals capable of both problem solving intelligence and dreaming like higher mammals, it is an example of similar end from very different means.
