My First IR Build

It came in today. About to head to Home Depot for some supplies to make the mount for it..

You do realize the lens is the small cylinder inside the clear case right? it's freaking small... I have no idea how I'm going to mount this thing.... so afraid I'm going to break it....

Yeah, I know, but these lenses can be even smaller :D

That is going to be hard job.
I ordered cylinder lens from Surplus Shed (CYLINDRICAL LENS, PCX - 4" LONG x 1/8" WIDE x 3mm FL) and I had no chance to fit it to right position. I couldn't achieve square.
And because of long focal length not all light was collected by lens.

I hope your lens is good one.

Here you can see topic where we were trying to solve my problem:

And even video where you can see problems with my cylinder lens:

Ahh but see here's the difference- Your lens you placed on the diode on it's side so that light passed through the curves. The GRIN lens is different.. you place the end of the lens on the diode, and through variant gradient indexes within the lens, the light comes out the other end focused. I already tried with mine, placing the lens standing up on the diode, powered it on, and got a very nice, small focused beam, but with a focal point about 7mm away.
next, I can pass it through another lens (which is what you need to do as well), which I can use to create a nice beam, with a much further focal point.

Well so far not having too much luck with it... At least, with mounting it. Any idea how hard it is to find copper tubing and washers this small? lol. Plus.... the lens has to be PERFECTLY centered on the die.. or blah. That and sadly I'm using an Aixiz acrylic lens, which sucks.

I wouldn't mind taking a look at it, but I took my build apart and sold the host/heatsink/module to a buyer that was doing a similar build...

So if you sent your laser with it, then I could probably machine a little holder to center the lens...

That's my main problem right now, is getting the lens mounted onto the diode...

Then again, if I sent you the lens (do you still have your diode at least?), You could probably tell me what your power meter says about whether or not it's helping... I don't know. I'd be happy to buy an assembly / module from you if you can get it mounted. If it still doesn't output the power we wanted, don't worry- I'll still pay for it, I won't make you waste your time. For now though, let me see if I can come up with something.

Just let me know...

I do have the 1/2" copper material for making modules: (but they are larger than AixiZ, I can easily fit my heatsinks to them though)

Glad to see your laser build continuing , and the grin lens works , They are rather small arnt they , i have one inside my 671nm laser head befor the crystals , its held by a small copper mount :P

Guys ---

Keep this up to date. This is where this hobby makes advancements. I'm about to order the 670 nM GRIN but I want to see how they work. Making a housing is a piece of cake with a #50 drill.

Does anyone have a picture of this grin lens output from a multi-mode diode? Does it need to be rotated to work?
