My First IR Build

However, this small pot looks like in fire :D
I have big wirewound pot and it gets very hot after 10 seconds...can you imagine what would happen to your small pot :D

You should buy AMC7135 regulator (one that has 4 AMC7135 chips on PCB).
That driver should give you about 1.4A but don't give it more than 4.2V.

That should be the most efficient driver for IR diodes.
You can power up your diode with only one 18650 battery that is great for portable builds.

As for the pot... it doesn't really get hot ever on me... Of course, that may because it is set for least resistance lol.
 





I would prefer 1.4A for 1W diode.
1.05A is not enough for 1W diode to give you 1W of light.
 
By the way, I am currently pushing about 1.4 amps into mine.... If i put electrical tape directly above the die (less than a mm away, but not actually touching), it punches a hole right through it with no problem. In fact..... I have a video of it lol. Give me a moment to pull the video from my laptop and upload, I'll post it in a few minutes....

And I don't want to give up at all on this diode... I don't have money to waste lol, so I have to get something out of it.

Besides, I discussed the whole GRIN lens thing with my father-in-law (mad scientist type engineer, brilliant man), and yes, the GRIN will do what we need. As far as mounting, I'm talking to someone from a company that makes these kinds of lens, he can probably provide a solution.

I've got two diodes, so if we find a solution, I'm ready! :)

Not sure I want to buy the GRIN lens without knowing for sure if it will work out...

The one I saw was only 1.8mm in diameter, which is much smaller than the window of the diode:

I was looking at number NT64-526, which has .23mm working distance...

True, but I'm sure there's a way to modify the circuit ever so slightly to give me that increase.

Either way, the main problem we are facing is that stupid lens. Hopefully I can figure out a way to mount it properly soon. Jay- I'm probably still going to need to order (at the very least) a heatsink from you. But, let's wait until we get the lens mounting figured out of course so we don't have issue with that. I will probably also want your glass lens assembly as well... this Aixiz acrylic isn't going to cut it.. literally lol.

Like I said before, I'm talking to one of the people who manufactures such things, and he can most likely provide some sort of a mount for the lens.

Always be careful doing that, though... The smoke can leap backwards and put a nice film over the window or the die itself depending on what kind of diode you've got..
 
cool so you can burn with it at point blank range without a lense?
Well if you want to get technical, when the beam is AT the die, it's extremely focused, so directly on the die you have pretty good effectiveness

Heh funny you mention that... I actually did accidentally touch the tape to the die (in the video, the last time I burned it, right after I try again and nothing happens) It left a VERY small black spec where the tape burned onto it... Luckily I got to it quickly with isopropyl alcohol (when it had cooled down enough that is.


I HATE MY KEYBOARD..... my backspace key doesn't work anymore for some reason :(

Oh and that driver from hong kong finally showed up.... Hoping I can have something working by this next weekend...
 
Ok, here is what I came up with.... Please, excuse the crude drawing, don't have my graphics software at work....

But basically, the diode is 9mm. So, I use a 9mm inside diameter copper tubing, mount the diode in. Then, get a 9mm blank washer (no hole), and drill out a hole 1.8mm thick in the center (well, maybe something like 1.85.... whatever), and slip the GRIN into that and epoxy around the outside of the lens where it touches the washer. Then I slide this assembly into the copper tubing so that the lens is on the diode. epoxy the edges of the washer. Then slide this entire assembly into the module, and use the lens in the module to finish focusing it.

That's the best I've come up with so far.

Well, according to UPS, the lens should be in today.... Just need to get over to Home Depot or Lowes and grab the other items to build the mount.

I'll let everyone know how it goes, and actually will video it all and post it on my youtube.
