My DIY Blu-Ray

Does the tailcap click?

Nope I only had a non clicky switch that I harvested from God knows where. I would have liked to have a clicky but as stated earlier i'm making this laser with stuff I have laying around. Other than the driver, Laser Module, and Battery from DX.

Glad to hear you're putting the Low Battery LEDs to good use.. What is your laser powered by? Is it a FlexDrive and one Li-Ion?

You should be just fine with the LED and one diode, lighting up at 3.1V, to give you a little advance warning. You don't want to discharge the Li-Ion below 2.8V.

Not sure if I can get it to fit Igor you need to find a source for 3mm L.E.D's but I will try maybe just leave it inside and run a piece of fiber optic who knows.
I will be using the Flexdrive2 and a DX UltraFire CR2. Thanks again for the L.E.D's :)

Don't mention it, you saved me with those washers... I will give you a special lens for your laser, if only it works, when i test it.

Anyway, the CR2s are different from Li-Ions.. If i knew this before, i would have included some Zener diodes with your LEDs, instead of regular diodes..

The green batteries can be discharged down to 2V each - 4V total. The LavaDrive would continue working off them untill they were dead. There is no protection circuitry in them, so they would get damaged.

The LEDs are supposed to turn on at 2.7V, which is the lowest safe Li-Ion discharge voltage. You need to add 1.3V to that.. This is a similar problem i had with the prototype device i am using these LEDs in (4x Ni-MH powered)...

Maybe you could find a 1.3-1.7V Zener somewhere? You don't need to drain the batteries completelly either and it's good if you get a little advance warning..

If i can find such a Zener, i will send some to you..

About the size.. I have not yet been able to find similar LEDs anywhere else. And they only come in 5mm. But i usually file them down a bit, either to give it a flat top or make it thinner. I don't know exactly how much space you have in there. I was even considering using these in my tiny laser, but it would prevent the modularity of the design... I am sure you could squeeze it in somehow.. The optical fiber is not a bad idea. There are also some plastics that act like that, and are often used in CD and DVD drives, to transfer the light from an SMD LED on the PCB to the front plate.

Hey, i have some clicky switches coming in soon from DX. If you need some, i could send a few to you.

just another picture

This has got to be the best DIY laser pointer job I have seen in a very long time!

Very nice work.

LOL don't exaggerate DDL but thanks for the compliment especially considering there is nothing inside it yet :) And to me the best one I have seen so far is the one Photon Pharmer made. Remember i'm talking about complete homebrew not retrofits second would be Rog(somenumbergoeshere) His module looks like a clockwork. And I really like the little grey alien that Igor put together but that's a retrofit.

I'm sure there are many others but i'm new to the forum give me time......

and a piece of tail :)  ;D that is the button people you hold it down to keep the laser on.

It's not about the perfection to me really... at least in these DIY's. I like the idea of looking around and finding little pieces of what others would call trash and making something very nice as this out of them. This, personally, looks the best to me :)

I still can't believe i actually was able to figure out a way to attach the shirt button to the switch and was also able to solder all those damn tiny letters to the barrel. I wanted to use silver solder but only had some rosin core laying around. Would be nice to be able to polish up between the letters but i don't have tools small enough.

I like the "distressed" look it has around the letters.

Peace,

actually I liked it too Dave but i'm biased by the fact I can't do anything about it. I'm thinking if I should make the whole thing more steam punk looking or not, or just leave it like this.
