My analysis of the AMC7135 Driver

Benm,
It's mounted on the DX flashlight PC board, and yes, the pc board is just floating, I don't have it mounted in anything yet. I will go back and check it again to be positive, but as I recall it only got a bit warm running on Nimh batteries. Anything above 4.5 volts and it begins to heat up fast. So it is perfect for 3 Nimh or alkaline cells. We know how fast alkaline cells sag so their voltage would not be a problem, but like I said, I will double check. Also a li-ion cell would do the trick.

If you use a 1/2 watt 33 ohm resistor in parallel with the laser diode, it will get warm, but not hot. Using this resistor soaks up ~100 ma's of current so the laser diode will be seeing ~250 ma's. The way I measured current was to put a 1 ohm resistor in series with the LD. Of course it is not necessary, but I wanted to get the best readings I could with what I have.

The 7135 could be removed from the board and used as a stand alone device. Keep in mind DX does have various flashlight boards that use this chip. Personally I think the 350ma ones are good for people that do not want to mess with dismounting the SMD. But if you plan to, the other boards that have more than one 7135 on them might be a better value.

I went back and checked for the thermal part of this.

At 4.5 volts the 7135 does begin to feel hot...but is still within limits as the thermal protection is not kicking in.

At 3.8 volts it feels warm. I let it run for a few minutes at a time.

I think it would be fine in an enclosed environment such as a flashlight or whatever, but I would not apply more than 4.5 volts. BTW, the circuit board does absorb some of the heat, so if using the 7135 as a stand alone device, some heat sinking might be necessary.

The circuit board is a form of heatsinking on its own.. it's not uncommon for SMD devices that a certain area of copper connected to the larger tab is specified for given parameters.

Name your price for 2 and I'll pay you.

I'll probably be ordering some from DX and be happy to send you a couple of boards/chips at cost + shipping. But since i'm in holland the whole thing might take a couple of weeks to get to you.

Comidt is in africa. so that will be interesting! LOL holland to Africa from china. shoot, send it to me first and it'll hit almost all of the continents.. :) I'm going to be ordering 20 soon too.

Haha lol Kenom
Yeah, please BenM. i'm not in a rush
Give me an estimated price please.
Thanks

One drawback to using this driver is the laser module must be electrically isolated from the rest of the flashlight body, if the case is being used for the ground side. The reason is the ground wire coming from the 7135 is not the same as battery ground.

I like these drivers Gazoo...Thanks for providing this information on them. Just to let others know, in case you want to use these drivers for LED emitters, it seems that you don't have to worry about the (negative side of the battery common with the case) driver bypass issue when using emitters. Because the emitter is already isolated from the aluminum 'star' heatsink that it is mounted on. At least, this was the case with the two emitters I have tried. (MXDL stock, and a Cree Q5)

Hi

Is this thread on AMC7135 still relevant?

I am thinking of using it. Someone says these are 'easily modifyable' to 250 ma, etc.

Is that a tutorial or 'how-to' on it?

Thanks!

hi there
first post so here goes.
did my homework for a while reading, using the search as many require to many questions and went ahead and made some lasers.even though I did start from the maglite whch is still alive after 2 months.this laser stuff is really great, especially due to this forum.burnt a few in the making but finally got there.
I'm posting here due to this monster I finished today based on the amc7135 350ma driver I got from dx and modded. soldered a second chip taking it to 700ma put a 1ohm resistor in series and a 10uf cap and the loc from lpc-815 sled is running at 460-480ma and rocking from 1 14500 3.6v rechargeable.
have made a PHR-803T at 150ma and a 22x lg loc at 430ma both with rkcstr's drivers.
can someone reply as to which diode of the 3 in a GGW-H20L sled is the blu and which is the red?
