Mac vs PC - Let's Keep it Civil.

@SOG - Star Trek is never too far off topic as far as I'm concerned:)

Not sure who you're talking about, but I'll let my subconscious work on it... if it's from star trek I'll remember.

@laserpyro - All three what?

@all - Looks like on of the big reasons people like macs is for their start up time.

I find this to be somewhat odd. The reason being is for my desktop, the start up time is 50 seconds, a minute at the most, and I don't use SSDs. From sleep, my computer wakes and is ready in 3-5 seconds. I would imagine if I were to install an ssd these times would be even faster.

Older computers, like the one I use at work from 2008, can be optimized to start in about a minute and a half, and to wake from sleep in ~10 seconds or so. Although I don't see a point to turning off a work tower at all:)

Too many people calling it Star TRACK... it is Star TREK...

Except for this, which was obviously intentional:

Never watched Star Track before. Of course I'm not into running :D

For those saying TRACK instead of TREK, If Capt Kirk was your DI in StarFleet Boot Camp, he'd make you drop and give him twenty... or running around the STAR TRACK all day and all night until the tribbles came home.

So use the RIGHT WORD, so you don't get into tribble.

OMG you guys are right! :D Star Trek Star Trek :thanks:

Time for the random annoying freak to rant... Mac is badnews ... I can say that much. (atleast for PCs/laptops)

-PRICE!!!!!! Macs are for the rich and are sold at massive profit.... Macs are always about the latest and new 200+ gadget. Never about dropping the price on previous products. They discontinue them rather than make them affordable. this is baaaaddddd news... if they become top of the market we are all screwed.

-Control! ... Mac is the one of those type of companies where you simply rent but not own their product. They have tried to sue people that innovative or practical with things with them(jailbreak). In addition, by controlling their OS they are forcing a monopoly on their software. bbbbaaaddd idea to support that. Hardware should never be tailored to be only certain company software specific.

-Power ... 2000 dollar macbooks for a verrryyy long time could barley play games on low graphics or even think about CG rendering. Granted they are improving on that now(cause there buying ATI cards instead) but you can always beat a mac pc/laptop in power with a windows machine when it comes to price.
If you are a man who wants power for price... windows is the way to go. Good programing threading and UI doesn't cut it when your trying to render a 10bil poly model... =P I can assure you of that.

However.... if you are a person who has no intention of fully utilizing your PCs resources ( the vast majority of people now days :cryyy::cryyy: ) and have an excess of money... macs are the way to go. Their products will work with little to no config, probably have no errors, and morons won't get viruses. They have practical application for people like photoshop graphic design artists or musicians who need good UI and threading sooner than raw power...

If they end up at the top of the market the EU will eat them for breakfast.

Like the Microsoft antitrust stuff... except worse.

I guess at least in part I started the thread to affirm my own point of view... and it has been affirmed:)

Hey, if they weren't so damned expensive and lowered the price of older models consistently, we would just consider it "another kind of computer". But sadly, that's not how they do things.

WARNING: Rant ahead, if you don't like rants skip over post.

I dislike apple far more for their business practices than for their actual products.

My first experience with a mac ever was on one of those all in one cube computers with a flat crappy keyboard and a hockey puck mouse... same mouse Stevo is so fond of he called it the best ever invented. After working on it for a few hours I despised everything mac.

My second experience was with the iPod, first gen... I was actually quite excited about this one, but then was completely baffled by the fact that WMP files would not play, I mean:wtf: Since quite a bit of my music at the time was in wmp, the iCrap first gen was a no go for me.

Their business practices have not improved at all, products are still based on style over function 100% of the time, and for some reason people are buying into the marketing iShit.

Ok. Sorry, rant over. Had to get that out.

I'm working on getting Linux backtrack 5 set up on my HTC inspire running leedroid Rom with sense 3.0. Can't do that with my jailbroken iPhone 4. Still both excellent phones. Depends what your using them for. I really like the aftermarket support that iPhone has.

Edit
Got to add, the new HTC is SO FAST and smooth when overclocking to 1800 mhz.

I'm using linux (Opensuse) on my desktop and laptop and I hardly run windows. Linux seems to be the winner of both. No pricey hardware and no stability problem. Actually, none of the disadvantages a mac or windows pc has, and most of the advantages. Compatibility is fine, only gaming isn't that succesfull.

Some may claim you'd need to be a geek to run linux, but it's mostly getting used to a slightly different gui. Being a geek does have the advantage though, it unlocks potentials windows and mac can only dream of.

People who think the blue E is the whole internet itself may find linux difficult, but they shouldn't be allowed on the internet anyway.

I'm working on putting together a kiosk system using Ubuntu (for various reasons)... working on getting a bunch of stuff installed and running.

Linux can be really infuriating (and obtuse) for someone who has never used it. I'm giving Google's search infrastructure a pretty good stress test. :tired:

I'm wondering if you are just directing this towards "stupid people" or "windows users". Please clarify because otherwise it's a pretty lame statement lol.
