Looking For a Specific Red Laser

Hello!

I'm on the lookout for a red laser where the beam is easily visible in a dark room and outside at night. I don't mind if it it can burn or not, although it would be a nice bonus if it could. I'm looking for something with a similar form factor to the wicked lasers nano. I would be getting the nano if it weren't for the company's horrible shipping times and notoriously poor construction in their products. Does what I'm looking for exist?

not really, you need fairly high powers to see a red beam. If you're not interested in burning, a 532 might work better. Since your eyes are more sensitive to green, you will be able to see the beam with significantly lower powers (and prices)

It is possible but you'll probably need a 638nm high power diode to satisfy your needs. Which means that something the size of the nano is not possible for your needs without having terrible battery life and short duty cycles. For an example take a look at the thread below which has a high power Mitsubishi 638nm diode in a kryton groove :)

Also have a look at this link to get an idea on apparent laser beam brightness for different wavelengths. For example in theory you will need 971mw of 638nm to have the same brightness as a 100mw green laser beam

Beam: (638nm 971.6mw) vs. (532nm 100mw)

Ohhh, the BEAM, yes! Why didn't you say so? It is much more visible at 638nm. I
suggest you pick up a pair of the Eagle Pair safety glasses from survivallaserusa.com or
Dragon Lasers. This is something you can build yourself. Otherwise PM me if you want
something fully assembled.

^^^Yeah I was wondering that too...

You can easily see 20 mW of 638 in a darkened room. If you want a nice little visible pointer, have a look at the laserbtb website. They have 20 mW 635 (or 638?) pens which are very good. You could also ask Offroadfreak if he has any. They were given away as gifts with some of the groupbuy orders...;)

@Will manners :beer:

What are you guys talking about? 660nm is easily visible in a dark room and under moonlight, even
<1mW. I suggest you pick up a pair of the Eagle Pair safety glasses from survivallaserusa.com or Dragon

I'm not sure how you got that 1mw 660nm has a visible beam in the dark. I was unable to see the beam of ~50mw 660nm in pitch black outside. Although since I don't have an LPM i'm only guessing at the output. It was able to light a match so I'm assuming that it is at least 50mw.

To the OP. I may have exaggerated the outputs that you would need. You may be satisfied with only 20mw of 638nm but it won't be extremely bright. Note that I am mainly basing my advice on this link. Apparent laser beam brightness can differ from person to person.

Don't mixed up 638nm with 660nm. Both are red lasers but 638nm is triple as bright a 660nm. A 200mW 638nm easily outperform 400-500mW 660 red laser in brightness.
So if you want a red laser with a easy seen beam I suggest a 638nm laser.
Also the air condition can make a big different. A foggy night makes any laser a light saber.

I may be building some 200mw 650's in polished C6's soon you can see that beam at night and it is good for burning plus way better beam specs.

If you want a visable beam in nano form factor get a good 532nm green pen.

Beam of 50mW of 532nm is as bright as 500mW of 638nm and 1750mW of 660nm

It really just depends on the person, I barely see the beam of a 600mw 635. To me, 400mw of 405 looks much brighter.

Can you please link me to the product you're talking about? It sounds like just the thing I want =)

The thing is, I have one. I want a red one since I already have two greens.

I want a link to the one he's talking about.
