. I can see them beam nicely with the 700mw 638 nm. Just discovered that ten min ago!!!

Grainde "You can easily see 20 mW of 638 in a darkened room. If you want a nice little visible pointer, have a look at the laserbtb website. They have 20 mW 635 (or 638?) pens which are very good."

I want a link to the one he's talking about.

If you want to see a beam get the 100mW 635nm single mode.

He's saying I'll be able to see the beam if it's 20mW. Why pay double for 100mw? I don't think I need that much power.

I highly doubt you could see 20mw beam. Unaided . I have a 280 mw 650 and can barely see the beam in pitch black. The 700mw 638 I just got has a good beam, but I wouldn't call it bright.

Darn... So would I be able to see the 100mW from lsaerbtb? Would that work out? I mean, the crappy WL Nano has a visible beam and it's "100mW" (Quotations to indicate that it's underspec but you know that).

Well the more the merrier. It's just the color your looking for isnt the best for a good beam. A 445 has a very nice beam due to their power. A 1w 445 has a very bright beam. You can get those for around 100$ from a member. But if your really after a red then I would get the strongest 638 you can afford.

Yes, red is the next in my collection because I have two great green lasers. Thanks for your help.

650nm 200mW is *barely* visible here. At the (far less polluted) city I used to live in it wasn't visible at all.

638nm 400mW is very visible but not to the point of being "solid" or bright. Maybe comparable to a 30mW green or something. The dot, OTOH, is insanely bright. The beam shape is very lineish, though. Mine is this one, but I got an overspec back in the day when Lazerer was still a good shop.

I don't think 20mW of 638nm will be very visible...

Beam visability depends upon atmospheric conditions i.e in fog beam is most visible.

On a clear night I also doubt you are going to see a 20mW 635nm beam.

A 100mW you should be able to see a faint/weak beam under clear clean air conditions.

Keep in mind a 500mW 635nm has a beam about the same as a 50mW 532nm green.

I thought it would be cool to get a red laser, but it's turning out to not be as worth while as I thought. I think I'll be sticking to green and blue.

Yes I'd recommend about 80-100mW of 635nm. It's about 3x as bright as 660nm and is quite affordable. It's got a hint of orange to it and is much easier to see. I can see a 5mw beam if this color but it's very faint. 100 will be much more visible without breaking the bank entirely. But visibility-wise red in general is poor for beam sighting. And it's still going to be faint
