London Greenwich Green Laser

ok just to elaborate on the pic above, the square hole at the top (with green splash all over) is where the laser exits the building to mark the 0 degree meridian line.

the equipment producing the laser is towards the back (behind where I was standing where I took this shot) but you can see a faint green line in the pic that lines up to where the beam originates.

So the laser itself is to the top right of the picture where the bright glair is? I can see the beam going through the hole in the front of the building but cant work out how its directed to it.

I just looked this building up on google earth again, unless google earth is wrong the building isn't actually dead on 0 degrees... Its on the 0 mark but its actually 0 00'05,48.

ermmm the super bright green spot with a square in the middle is where the beam exits the building. that leads to the front of the building and out into the sky.

the actual laser equipment is not in frame. If I had stepped back 3 steps and taken a pic in the same angle it would be right at the top of the pic. In this pic, the laser equipment was probably right above my head so that should give you an idea of where it is in respect with this picture.

Ok I've attached another picture here. Here you can see the laser equipment at the top of the pic and the other end of the room where it exits the building.

Oh right, pretty simple then.

Here's a picture of the beam, not the best but from the front of my house its the best I can get.

If the laser is intercepted by a building, then how on earth does it still continue on to lamborghini8s house?

That is in fact an excellent question. My hope is that they dialed up the power and burned through the building. Unfortunately, I doubt that's the case.

I'm poking around the internet to see if that photo is documented... I ran the real estate ad in the comments and it appears to have moved or now be defunct.

Here's the cached page with part of the phrase highlighted:

London Docklands Property sales and lettings by Gaynor Walker Real Estate. Specialist relocation and executive property search, short lets with a wide choice of waterfront apartments.

I'll check out snopes... if it's not there, then perhaps it was either faked or very quickly resolved.

It was mentioned in the article posted towards the beginning of the thread somewhere that they will simply adjust the laser so that its pointing upwards a few more degrees and above the building.

I guess that's what happened, I can't imagine that happening as it did in the picture... 5W of green directly into a tower block, how many health and safety people would be all over it. Maybe they kept the laser on during the time they where adjusting it? Maybe the picture was at the time it was being adjusted.

Anyhow I would love to live in that flat, not that I want to live in a flat or in that part of London, but still imagine it :D Every night you get an awesome 5W green beam just above your window :D

what the hell, you already live on 0 degree, have a green lasershow at night already, but its still not enough?!? :-P
pretty cool place to live!

I live with what I have haha, its an every day thing.

Living on 0 degrees don't really make any difference, although It can be amusing telling someone in the pub that if you go east across to the other side of the town you will be walking west haha!

The laser, well as you can see from the picture it just looks like a green spot light. Pretty cool knowing where it comes from and all but it's nothing special... not at least from my house. I heard a lot of people asking what it is but no one really seams at all interested when I tell them its a laser from London.

The ground level I am at, according to Google Earth, is 120ft and there's a huge field about a half an hour walk from my house that's at 212ft and looks out across my entire town and across the land as far as the eye can see. I just need to find the time, and a good enough route to get there one night. I can imagine I can see the beam really well from up there.

Well, if it's only on at night, and the workers are only there during the day, I guess a miscue could happen. Funny that it did / might have.

Found a more recent picture of it.

Going by the picture a few posts back of the beam being blocked the new building isn't a problem now. It looks like the same building to the right of the one with the lit up ring on top of it.

Strange illusion here though, if you look at the picture you can see its straight and level to the ground, yet from where I am it looks as though its pointing straight up. It explains why the more I look down to the bottom of the beam the thinner it looks, and the more I look to the top of the beam where it fades out it looks wider.

Weird illusion though.

Shame our laser'd building seems to be blocked out by the smokestacks in the picture. I'll bust out GIMP later and see what I see.

Don't post all this info on LPF. There are people there who'll go into foaming fits if you tell them someone is pointing a 5W green laser into public airspace... in a city to boot
