Lasers and Streetlights

I'm guessing those sensors don't make difference between red and green, as in brightness...and I'm guessing red would work if darklantz's friend's HeNe worked.....so would a crap 5mW red work?  :-/ I Could like buy them in bulk and set them on some stands to permanently keep the lights off , and who knows how much time they'll need to figure out why they don't work [smiley=evil.gif]

I saw in a movie that you can also use lasers to blind motion sensors, which kinda makes sense...I think it was "Entrapment" :-/
 





It works with a dollar store laser for some of them, id think 5mw would be OK as long as you could see where it was hitting ;D Just remember, not all street lights have a photocell on them, some of them have a central one somewhere, or they are on a timer.
 
ha nice video, the streetlights around my house have annoying little metal caps on the top, i haven't gotten any to turn off with my laser

;D This is funny! Nobody else i know have figured this one out! I discovered the street light thing when i was 15 with my first 5mW (that i paid 300. for, WAY BACK IN THE DAY!) The trick to it is, you must be facing the lamp from the south west. On the top of the light there is a little round piece on top of the lamp housing. Its on that little round thing that holds the sensor. Take a look during the day and you will see a 1in hole where the sensor is. A steady hand and a 5mW red and thats it! The beauty is, the light is high pressure sodium. When you hit the sensor, it shuts off and because its a HID light, it has to cool down before it can light again. Some lamps will recover in a minute, and the older bulbs may take as long as 10min. I had a very confused neighbour for a couple of years with that one....
 
That's cool. I wish my street lights worked like that, but the sensors are facing straight up and are essentially inaccessible.
 
Man, I learned that years ago with my first red.  You can also do it with yard lights, and all automatic house lights (controlled by photo sensor, obviously).

I think it depends on the area where you live, because mine are the on the North East (SoCal).

I believe not at all. Maybe the photo censor, but I’ve yet to cause one to malfunction. The cool thing about street light is they stay off for 20 sec or so, depending on the street light.
 
I live in Toronto Canada, and every light ive hit has worked, as long as you hit it from the south west facing north east. I believe this is the result of the positioning used so the light works with dusk and dawn. Right now I live in a 2 floor penthouse apt. by the beaches, and find it impossible to shut of any street lights from the 25th floor. But if I go down to the street level, the same lights can be shut down with ease, granted im facing north east.
 
*snif* i've pointed mine to every street light i've seen...but it seems they are ALL switched on in this country, couldnt find any with a photo sensor.
 
I wonder if you could blind the motion detector sensor above automatic doors in malls or gas stations? :P It would keep them from opening, haha :D
