I realize that the 405nm lasers work great on white matches or paper but will any color laser "ignite" magician's flash paper, and if so about at what mw power level? This is a GREAT effect for lasers! There are you tube videos about blue ray lasers doing this with ease.
 





yes i have black flash paper that i can ignite with my 532-650-or 405 units
oopsie i meant green red or purple lol
 
Depending on your power, You may need to add a black dot or something. 405 nM at 300+ mW doesn't care.

I just received a 180mw Blu-ray and can ignite flash paper with out adding a black mark. This was from about 8 inches away and took about 3 to 4 seconds to ignite. Using a black mark, it will ignite almost instantly. Flash paper and flash cotton burn so quick you can ignite it in your hand.
 
My 50 mW (green) o-like torch will only light it if I black-dot it first. However the 200mW (red) will light it thru a glass of water.

John, where do you buy this (black paper)? I looked for it when I bought my supply, but nothing but white.



I dont know if any of you have tried this, but I find it interesting;

Put the flash paper in a small glass jar with a very small neck opening,it will disappear but not flash ( must be lower O2 or something. Makes a terrible mess in the jar although, brown sticky goo all over.

I don't want to thread hijack, but this goes along the same theme.

My latest experiments involve trying to light Magnesium flakes. No luck yet, the silver color just reflects too much. No luck with a sharpie either. The flakes just gob up on the sharpie point. Going to try spray-painting the flecks black next.

When I first seen Mg burn, my mind screamed laser. Flicking a lighter(no flame, just sparks) will fire it right up. So I know it does not take much heat to ignite.
Produces a blinding white light show.Burns at 5000 degrees F

I will post a video when (and if) I have any luck.

Here's a video of some white flash paper being easily ignited with a PHR build!



Of course he did use one of my 405-G-1 glass lens mods with that build...

But still, it's probably only at 140mW's or so. :cool:
 
Blurays will light fuses, various pyrotechnic powders, black powder, and flash paper. Magnesium flakes are probably too big. Try magnesium powder, even better, magnesium powder mixed with powdered sulfur. This is flash powder, so use eye protection. My 6x bluray sets off zinc and sulfur mix instantly.

When I saw the words "burns at 5000 degrees F." something clicked in my head, so I GOOGLED up the 'properties of Magnesium' & found out that Magnesium burns at 2200 degrees C. which converts to 3992 degrees F. NOT 5000 F.
I guess I have WAY TOO MUCH TIME on my hands, & I'm sure anyone who reads this will agree. LOL HA HA HA .................rob

I have not been successful in igniting magnesium powder, even 300 mesh, with my blu-ray. Flash paper goes up quickly though!

Has no-one else tried ingniting the filings you get from sawing a diode heatsink?!!! This was one of the first things I tried with my senkat red. Measuring it on my recently aquired LaserBee, :whistle:, it is currently putting out ~80mW, (may have been more at the time tho').

Seems a waste to not use this swarf for something better than damaging an LOC during extraction!
